@bandicoot - we have no litter boxes, and not much nail clipping - for the 3-4 months it's warm enough for the cats to spend most of their time outdoors. :)
Our cat that hides from the housesitter came out willingly if warily when my great-nephew/wife were here. I wonder if it's because we were here as well. I may try that with the housesitter before we leave next time.
ArtGal: It's best to use a paper shredder that makes long shreds, not crosscut bits. The long shreds will stay inside the box and are easy to clean out. I use a plastic bag (any will do) as a hand mitt to lift out the clump of paper, then swish out the box with a bit of hot soapy water, let dry briefly, and refill. Takes about 5 minutes. While I'm waiting for the box to dry, I do the FlyLady swish & swipe in my bathroom. As long as I'm giving myself a fresh toilet bowl every day, it's nice to give kitty a completely fresh box, too.
Running a smal (in my home) cat sanctuary the house has cats age 14 days to 14 years right now. Favorit toys; jingle bell in the bathtub (too noisy? try a wad of foil) any emty box, a cat nip mouse tied to the door knob, empty tp rolls.
litter, I prefer clumping as there are four boxes to clean but our vet says the best for them is Yestrdays News. Personaly being money deprived at times I have used sand from a near by play ground, dirt from the yard, torn up paper. Never us anything you don't want kitty to "use" if it's not in the box.

Well, I just took the plunge. Yesterday I adopted a 1.5 yo male orange tabby. He's very mellow, but getting used to the house, kids, dog right now. I'm keeping him in our finished full basement for now until he gets used to the new surroundings. I'm using Feline Pine cat litter and the food (dry) the foster mom used. All I got was the litter pan and the bowls. We have some mice, so maybe the lack of toys (he doesn't seem the toy type) will encourage him to chase them!
Awww, good for you, mskris! Maybe he'll play a bit more when he gets settled. I think it depends on how much previous owners played, though. I've never stopped playing with mine, and she still expects me too. (And is miffed when I don't.) I have friends with cats that were treated as "adult" cats regardless of the cat's interest, and they don't play much at all with their humans.

Seriously, Congrats! You and your new pal will become great friends! Our new addition is providing hours of entertainment and has quite a personality...definitely NOT a scaredy-cat...weight is up to a whopping 2 pounds and she is already putting the dog in its place :) Vet believes that she may be part Maine-Coon...which is what our last cat was...she is the same color as the previous fur-ball (gray tiger), AND (when the vet guesstimated her age) she has the same birthday as prior cat...we may have a bit of serendipity going on here! :)
