Any ideas on the best place to store coffee filters? Mine sit on top of the coffee can on the counter. I set up the coffee for morning and hate handling the stuff. Coffee grounds spill no matter how careful I am and the filters get wet from me pouring the water into the pot. I don't want to handle the stuff any more than I have to.

When I had a coffee pot that used filters I had a permanent one, like this:

(They also make ones with pointy bottoms for differently shaped machines.)Posted 1 year ago # -
If they're basket-type filters, they fit nicely in a cereal bowl, a medium-size margarine container or a large mug. For cone filters, I find it's better to leave them in whatever box or bag they came in.
I had one of the permanent filters once; the gold-plated ones in particular have to be cleaned very carefully to avoid scratching them. I switched back to paper (usually opting for the unbleached kind unless the store only has regular ones).

we use a filter made from stainless steel, like this one:
http://www.edelstahl-in-bestform.de/bilder_gross_con/b3120_haarsieb_spitz.jpgit is small, it is robust, it is easy to clean (dishwasher) and it is cheap. and i especially like the taste of the coffee. we put coffee in a coffeepot, add hot water, let it rest and then filter it (put the filter in the mug and pour the coffee through the filter). in my opinion it tastes way better than the usual filtered coffee...

I have a permanent filter but read recently that an unbleached paper filter is better to use as it filters out more unwanted stuff. So now I put the paper filter in the permanent one!
I store my filters in their original bag on top of my coffee in a cabinet over the coffeepot.Posted 1 year ago # -

Maybe these flat-type paper filters are specific to my part of the world - but if you should using such, there exist these neat suction-cup filter holders.

I use the box they come in, tearing off the top to have easy access/viewing. I use unbleached cone-shaped #4 filters. I store them right next to the coffee can(s) which are in the cabinet immediately next to the coffeemaker.

I have the same one, herisff. It has two strong suction cups and goes on the tile above the coffee machine.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I have tried those metal mesh filters and do not like them. I am not the coffee drinker, so I don't know how it affects the taste. All I know is that banging the filters on the compost bin or trash can increases the debris quotient and I still have to rinse the thing into the sink, thus staining the white sink even more.
I have had those triangle filters Katha montioned in a previous coffee pot and used a ceramic napkin holder to corral them. That worked very well but this incarnation of a coffee pot uses the bowl-shaped filters.
The mugs are in a narrow cabinet that is closest to the coffee pot. It's a sink-outlet-mug cabinet conundrum.

that´s right, the metal mesh filter method stains the sink. what i do if i don´t have enough time or if i´m in the mood for a coffee but not in the mood for cleaning afterwards: i drink a cup of instant coffee. what about that? you don´t need a filter at all :)

For single-serve coffee and very little mess, I am a huge fan of the AeroPress, which I recommend if you also have an electric kettle to boil the water (from a previous thread I gathered that this is not something to take for granted; which surprised me because for me this was pretty much the standard staple appliance - first thing I bought when moving out of my parents' place!). I bought one in February, and have been using nothing else for my coffee since then.
For what it is (basically a bit of plastic and rubber), the AeroPress is a bit expensive. For its function (quick, little-mess, one-cup coffee) the price is ok. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AeroPress

I used unbleached paper filters. I tried a permanent filter, but it allowed too many coffee grounds into the coffee, and I cough too easily on small particles.

I have my filters & coffee in the cabinet directly above the coffeemaker's place on the counter, which is right in front of the one of the two outlets in my kitchen.
AnotherDeb, is your cabinet one of those with two compartments, and if so are the compartments tall enough to screw in one of those rubberized metal racks to the bottom of the middle shelf? Could the filters sit on such a rack, right above your mugs? Or (alternatively) could you screw in cup hooks to hold the mugs and set the filters on the shelf?

Hey, ChaCha, I think we have a winner! I am going to try keeping the filters on top of the mugs. That shelf is stacked double with mugs but I can cull a few. Now that summer is upon us, we don't need all the mugs for the tea and cocoa I also drink in cold weather. I will look for a narrow rack to hang from the shelf above if that doesn't work out. Thanks!

Katha, I use an Aeropress every day too. I've got a hanging basket next to my wall-mounted electric water heater (ah, weird 50s German kitchen) that holds it, the filters, and a can of ground coffee.
I'm thinking of getting a permanent metal filter from here: http://coava.myshopify.com/collections/frontpage/products/disk-coffee-filter
It can store inside the Aeropress and then I'd have room in the basket for my cups, which will make my obsessive nature happy. I've got plenty of time until I run out of paper filters, though.

My AeroPress sits on the kitchen counter next to the electric kettle in a bread basket, together with opened packages of rice wafers, sesame sticks and - sometimes even - bread.
Can you tell that I am not finished decluttering? At least it's contained...For the AeroPress filters, an empty can of the "can't believe it's not liverwurst" -like organic pâtés ( http://www.alnatura.de/assets/products/imageCache/020940-0183-0191-100.jpg ) fits perfectly. The labels come off, and you're left with an aluminum can with a clear plastic lid. Highly recommend it, the pâtés (great pantry item, as they keep forever, plus: good conscience!) as well as the AeroPress filter storage solution. ;-)

I just place my paper filters upside down on the coffee can in the cabinet.
Little fun fact: If you have a stained sink from coffee or other food, the gel-based toilet bowl cleaners work AMAZING.

@alorenzo, I guess part of my problem is that we buy coffee in large containers, and they don't fit in the small cabinets nearby. After reading your post, I wonder if I should store smaller amounts of coffee in that cabinet and leave the big kahuna in the pantry.
Nice tip on the sink issue! Got any hints on the ever-present counter drips and scattered grounds from DH's coffee slops? I really hate the mess that coffee makes, but am thankful each time I deal with it than I have my DH there making the mess. (Every black cloud has a dark brown ring around it, so to speak)

Another Deb, is the mess from the coffee maker or the cups? If it is just the area around the coffee maker what about containing it all in an attractive tray that suits your decor?

djk, The grounds spill a bit as we load the filter, scattered on the counter, so that's part of it. Then the water drips and splashes when I pour into the reservoir, spots on counter unless I wipe immediately. The rest of the mess is when DH takes the pot off before the drip is done, and the burner is splattered, and finally, the filling and sloshing of cups leaves coffee liquid on the counter to dry into an artistic batik which must be scrubbed off. Sigh.
Coffee is a messy habit. I have considered a tray because there is often a stain under the coffee pot, but it would be more of the same and take up more of the surface.Posted 1 year ago #
