Hey, congrats! that's awesome :-) It's really nice that you got a rescue cat, too. They make great pets, both the cats I grew up with were rescues, as were most of the cats I've met :-)

Re: being shallow about the colors. I kind of understand that lol. The ones I grew up with didn't match the decor - my mom's place has various colors depending on the room, ie one in blues/golds, one in greens/cream, and so on - but they matched each other: they were both orange. We didn't set out for it to happen that way, they were just the cats we crossed paths with at the right time :-) But it was really cool (and sort of adorable) because they used to sleep curled up together a lot, a big mass of orange cat decorating beds at all hours :P

Oh man, I really miss them now :-/ And I really really want a cat. It's close to zero degrees out (which is BAD where I am as it rarely drops under 10 celsius), so prime housecat weather, but my life is too changeable right now to let me give a cat a good home :P So ruth, please give yours a big belly rub on my behalf :P

"Tabico Dreamcoat," Tabby for short. :-) Not southwestern, but hey.

re: shallow: DH and I definitely chose our cats for their looks. One is a black minky plushball and the other is a seal-point Ragdoll. We are fortunate that they are both *nice* cats as well!

also, @Another Deb and Ella, those were terrific suggestions. One could even string a bunch of them together for a truly grand name ... e.g. Lupe Squash Blossom de Sedona.

Ours are named Esmeralda Lucrezia McWeasel and Benito Pussolini McBadger.

Cats are not clutter - they are essential members of the Cat Lovers family! :) Congats on the new members of your family. I have 2 cats Blanche and Leanne (Blanche is White short hair, Leanne is Tortoiseshell medium hair).

No extra names - those are great names so far!

Wow and I thought I was creative with Simon and Garfunkel as my cats (two littermate siamese colored brothers topping the scales at 16+ pounds each). And Wilson, black, stubby tail, *normal cat* size, named after the volleyball in Castaway!

@Scarlet- I was unconsolable when I lost a dear cat back in the 1980's after 13 years. The instant I adopted the current sweet kitty, everything was better.

Next time we are planning to add a dog, since hubby is a dog person, but I will always have a cat as well.

The only clutter I associate with owning a cat is that cats are harder to plan travel around, meaning you can't take them with you or kennel them easily. Luckily we found a great pet-sitter who can come to the house for this old kitty. I can't imagine leaving her at a kennel. I once took a cat on a cross country camping expedition, including some trails in a national park. The German tourists loved meine Katze!

My current cat is named after a battleship, BTW; The USS Lexington (Lexie the Gray Ghost.

What a fun thread! I've been enjoying reading all the names and the origin of them.

My dogs came already named and already familiar with those names: Taz and Nikita (which, since I don't particularly care for the name, I have shortened to just Kita).

My cats either were found by me, so no names, or had been given names by the shelter but didn't seem familiar with them. So I have:

Ella - after Ella Fitzgerald - She was originally named Chloe, but my sister who lives downstairs had a cat named Cleo and I kept getting mixed up. I thought about Sassy, a nickname for Sarah Vaughan, another jazz singer, but after trying it out for a couple of days I decided it didn't really suit this nervous and skittish cat so went with Ella instead.
Tryst - Came to me named Rocco, but not responsive to that. Renamed because he's a lover and comes to me in my bed every single night ;-) Tryst is sometimes referred to as Trysty McSwishy because he has a very swishy tail!
GG - GG stands for grey goose. He is grey tabby, and was found as a very young kitten abandoned in a park. Pretty sure he wasn't feral, but skittish about all these strange hands reaching for him to catch him. It was VERY hard to capture him and as I chased him (not really) for a couple of hours I kept calling him a silly little goose. Hence, GG!
Reflex - another abandoned kitten, but about 6 months old. Different section of the same park system. Very friendly, easy to catch. I was determined to find his owner or find him a new home (feeling like I had enough pets already!) so I didn't name him for a few weeks. Then one day, a Duran Duran song came on the radio. "The Reflex is a lonely child, he's waiting by the park." Instant naming, and once I've named them, they're mine for good.

My Dark Legion of cats is definitely way up there on the Weird Cat Names scale:

- Ludwig von Snow: Acquired from a musician acquaintance, his original name was just "Snow." Fluffy white cat, deaf since early kittenhood, he's been known to sleep on the cushions inside a bass drum while it was being played.

- Caramon and Raistlin, named after the Majere twins from Dragonlance. Both brown-black tabbies. One is a huge, gentle cat with a perennially baffled expression; the other is small, slender, prone to sudden turns of mood and way too smart for everyone else's good.

- Walter J. Smooch, silver tabby with white tip on his tail. A friend named him Walter; I nicknamed him Smooch because of his habit of waking me up at 5 a.m. with his little wet nose.

- Gregory Greyscale, who looks like a Russian Blue with silver toes.

- RJ-45, the only girl cat. Fifth-born in the litter, hence "Cat 5" (insert computer geek groans here). Black cat with white patch on her chest.

- Frey, a.k.a. "Fuzzy Butt," a.k.a. "Kittens," a.k.a. "Hercules," a.k.a. "Boot Mangler." Not sure what he is; imagine a miniaturized Maine Coon with a shrivelled right ear, and a fluffy brown tail that spins in circles when he gets excited. He also has the dubious distinction of having been spayed and neutered: When we adopted him he was behaving like a female in heat, and even the vet didn't figure it out till Frey was on the operating table.

We currently have two rescue cats. Both look like seal point siamese. Comet is short haired, and she got her name because of her long tail and her tendency to streak around when startled. Simone came to us named, and we liked it so we kept it. She is long-haired and mats very easily - groan. She is something of a tomboy. If she were a human child she'd have blond culrls and dress in overalls, getting constantly dirty outdoors. LOL

There are no kennels in our area that take cats, so we always have a housesitter when we travel. Comet is always freaked, and hides from her all the time. Simone is a love sponge and sucks right up to the sitter. :)

I don't have a great name suggestion but I still almost wet my pants when remembering the Friends episode in which Phoebe changed her name; "Princess Consuela Bananahammock, Valerie to my friends"... Congrats to the clutter!

The Thundering Furlumps, by age:

Fynn and Eiryt are littermates: they're 16 year old domestic longhair/Siamese crosses, adopted by DH before we married. Fynn is a flame point; Eiryt a seal point, sadly dealing with Feline Cognitive Dysfunction: so far it's expressing as sleeping a lot and occasional bouts of yowling/forgetting where the food dishes are.

Tuppence, a 10-year-old feral tuxedo: she is the last cat from the TNR program we started when we moved in 11 years ago, as we had to put her brother Tommy to sleep Christmas before last: he was dying of cancer. We see her lounging on the furniture under the grape arbor or on the branches of the apricot tree in the summer (when she's not delighting our neighbor's tiny daughter by napping on their covered back porch), and check for her tracks in the snow in winter. She sleeps in our boiler room -- there's an old window that opens into the crawlspace, and we have a bed on a ledge there for her.

Mushi, a 9-year-old tuxedo: Tuppence's nephew, found in the back garden by DS when his mama abandoned him at three weeks. I have posted photos of him on FB with the caption "Have you ever wondered what a $5000 cat looks like?", as he's cost us that much in emergency vet bills over the years. I love him ridiculously despite the stress he's caused me.

These will be our last cats, as DH's allergies have only improved somewhat after four years of allergy shots: an epic amount of decluttering will happen after they go, and I keep telling myself that I can volunteer somewhere after and visit friends with cats, but it's tough to think about years without them.

We have a 13 yr old tiger cat named Sydney.
She has become much friendlier the older she's gotten, not as much time outside
and likes to be cuddled up next to a warm body. One of her legs/hips has started "clicking"
when she walks. Arthritis, I imagine.
Unfortunately dh and I are somewhat allergic. She will be our last feline.
We also have a 9 yr old Brittany name Josie, who snores and sometimes wets the bed if we let her sleep with us.

congrats on your new addition! I've found I'm partial to orange tabbies. We had one named "Punkin'" that we lost (ran away and I'm sure was taken in) during the East Coast hurricane last summer. Now we have one named "Gibby." The name is from a kids' tv show my kids watch all the time, but it fits him. He's "Gibby Kitty" to us now. both cats were adopted and very mellow. Gibby is a lazy lap cat - my type of cat! The shelter told us he was a year old, but the vet said he's closer to 6. I had him fully checked out and vaccinated after adoption. Funny thing - he sneezes a lot, but seems otherwise perfectly healthy. He terrorizes our dog (Jack russell mix) and they're about the same size!

Thanks for your posts, everybody. Wrangler is settling in just fine. I had forgotten how playful a young cat can be. It's fun. She is good company.This morning she actually chased her tail while playing on our bed as we woke up. Hilarious! She was like: whose tail is that?

My almost-twelve-years-old Emmie still chases her tail occasionally. With crazy face on. "Hai!! Tail intruder! I kill you!!"

My last cat was a tuxedo - I named it "Mooch" after the "Mutts" comic character...then I found out that the comic character is male and my cat was female. :-) She died about a dozen years ago. About 9 years ago we went to Germany and met some extended family - one couple had a female tuxedo named Püntkin because, when they got her as a little kitten, she looked like a little dot (or point).
