I am just very happy to announce that we have a new kitty! Our beloved cat Krystal died more than a year ago, we took a long time getting over that to get a new cat. It took us a month looking at potential cats to adopt, and we are so happy we found one! She is a peach-and-gray calico tabby -- you can see the stripes through the colors -- with a white breast and white paws. Her eyes are very green. She is a mama cat, really a teen mama, as she was found with her 3 babies. The babies are now all adopted out, she has been spayed and she is ours! She is a year old. Very sweet-tempered. We haven't decided a name yet. She matches our house with its southwestern colors, which sounds shallow, but is fun!

I know many Unclutterers are also cat lovers!

Always fun to have a new kitty! Nice age, too. Young enough to play (and be trained) but old enough to do less sharp little claws and teeth damage. Enjoy!

We haven't decided a name yet, any suggestions? Something reminiscent of the southwest . . .

She sounds like a beauty!
The only Southwest-type of name I can think of is "Fe" as in Santa Fe
(literally 'holy faith' in Spanish).

Great suggestions! I wouldn't have thought of any of those. Our family went on a really unforgettable trip to the Grand Canyon over Christmas, and I would like to commemmorate that with this name -- it would feel like "closing a loop" somehow. Maybe "Bright Angel" we could call her Brighty. Or Kaibab.

Southwestern ideas for a cat name:

Rio, Pecos, Hopi, Willow, Lupe, Sedona, Koko (Kokopelli), Wiki (from Wikiup), Sage, Gila, Pima, Cisco, Pancho, Salsa, Chili, Silver, Taco, Pinon, Feather, Concho, Bolo...I've been around a lot of gift shops. :-)

Congratulations on your furry addition!

It really warmed my heart to read this. My kitty passed away in November, and I miss her desperately. So glad to see that you were able to welcome another kitty into your lives after your loss, gives me hope that I will be able to do the same some day.

The only southwestern-type name I can think of is "Adobe" (is that even southwestern?)--you could call her "Doby" for short!

No name suggestions, but such great ones here!

Congrats on the new kitty, may you enjoy getting to know her.

@pkilmain, one of my first two cats was named Phantom. The kitty love of my life, that one cat that you have a really special bond with. He died almost 5 years ago (on Valentine's Day, no less) and I still miss him. *Sniff*

@Scarlet, take your time - you will know when it is the right time for you to bring another cat home. The shelters are always full of cats and one of them will be just right for you. Or two of them? I have several pets, and have always found them a great comfort when one of them passes away. And shelters have more difficulty finding homes for bonded pairs (pairs who come in together and who are attached to each other), so if you can afford the maintenance costs (food, litter, vet care) you would be doing a great thing. There are other benefits too, such as them being able to play together and keep each other occupied and active.

Congrats on the new kitty. No name ideas (never been to the South of the US) but I'm sure you'll come up with a great name for her.

@PJ: When we got our two cats a few months after my first cat had died those were just the reasons why we chose to have two cats. I think this is especially important if the cat(s) are going to live in an apartment with no possibility to go outside and socialize with other cats.
With my first cat we tried to get a second one a few years after we'd had him but it didn't work out, he was too used to being the "king of the house". But looking back I also think we might have rushed things.
Now we have 2 brothers (they couldn't be more different) and while they are not the most affectionate with each other they do play together and especially when we are out of the house all day it's good to know they are not completely alone.

My older two children's cats include one female, white with black spots like a cow, and one male, orange marmalade with orange eyes. They are named Princess Honey and Snigglefritz (Fritz for short).

What can I say. My children were very young when they named their cats.

My partner has an enormous grey striped long-haired menace named Zoe.

My youngest has two hamsters (hilariously I never realized they mimic the cats - one orange and one black and white spotted) named Ginger and Freckles.

I have no pets. I am more of a horses type of gal, and we now are city dwellers and I can't afford boarding. I had a Morgan mare for years.

The name we are "trying out" for a few days is Wrangler. Partly to remember the very special trip we took over Christmas, to the Grand Canyon. If anybody is interested in reading about that mule ride, I'm riding it up in sections for my blog -- the first 2 are posted. The URL is my name dot com.

The other reason we like Wrangler is that the cat's front legs are a little bow-legged like she just got off a horse. I'm hoping it's a cute quirk and no problem.

If Wrangler doesn't feel right we'll experiment with other names.
