I've always been claustrophobic(even as a child) and believe that has played a role in how I live. Not liking small enclosed spaces tunnels, stacks of books/papers, any disorganized bunch of something laying around.
I don't imagine you could be a hoarder if you are also claustrophobic. But I suppose it's possible that a hoarder could be so immobilized by their stuff that they become claustrophobic and can't do anything about it.
What about you- claustrophobic or not? Do you think it has anything to do with whether you've had clutter problems or just the opposite?

It's a very interesting point of view. I am clautrophobic (incredibly so. when I am in big crowds of people and get pushed/smooshed I literally have a panic attack). I think that it has a role in my reasons behind why I live a clutter free life but I never thought about it until your post!

Not sure if it's related to clutter problems or not, but yes, some claustrophobia here. And it's worse in big crowds of people; I avoid crowds whenever possible, because I go all turtle-shell-y when people bump into me and jostle me. Hate that.
Also, a certain style of house will not be an option for me when I start house-hunting again -- Cape Cods, with the itty-bitty attic-like 2nd floors and slanted-in, very low ceilings. Just looking at a picture of the inside of a house like that induces claustrophobia. <shudder>

I don't mind small spaces (like a room in a house or an empty elevator)...that makes me feel cozy/safe. I do, however, mind large crowds...I like my personal space and being in a crowd nixes that. I always go to restaurants and stores during "off" hours to avoid throngs of people. Don't like concerts for the same reason. Yep...claustrophobic! :)
