the kitty genovese case is now known to have been wildly exaggerated and mis-reported for sensational "facts".

BF has hoarding tendencies (his mom was a hoarder) and feels more secure with lots of stuff around him. I'm the opposite. Every day I get rid of something. I am constantly on the prowl for items I can live without. At this moment, there are 5 huge bags of stuff in the home office--kitchen stuff we never use, books, a quilt, and clothes. I'm taking them to Goodwill next week. Every couple of months I donate several bags of stuff. I can't believe we have so MUCH stuff. I would really love to own almost NOTHING. I don't know if it's possible. You have to have clothes and shoes, for example. And if you have a pet, it needs food and supplies.
I've been reading a blog called "miss minimalist" which is absolutely gripping and thought-provoking--it's written by a woman who has admirably streamlined her life.
I don't think I could go as far as she has, but it's a laudable goal. Everyone should read it.Posted 1 year ago # -
I believe it, bandicoot. But I think it was more a matter of people assuming the Police were called by someone else already. The hype does not ring true that no one cared enough to call. I have always doubted a lot of the "facts".

@chacha1 -- ok, then it's more about having peace of mind than actually fearing an IRS audit. I think maybe JuliaJayne is right and your husband doesn't know how to start. Also, people have different reasons for finally decluttering, so even if he wouldn't go for the "but paying bills in the den makes no sense" argument, maybe "talking to your clients in the kitchen isn't appropriate" works. I'm not saying: Nag and force him, I'm only saying: Talk to him about it, maybe he thinks the same way! :o)
@terriok: LOVE that "Miscellaneous" folder. My ex-boyfriend had important papers scattered all over his apartment and when he was looking for something specific, he used to say "I know exactly where it is, I can narrow it down to these 400 square feet!" (the size of his apartment). After I convinced him to file papers just to save him the occasional 12 hours of panicking and looking for something, he ended up using a shoebox for the important papers ("I'm narrowing it down to half a square foot!") as his "Miscellaneous" folder ;o)
