far from conclusive:
Jonathan Yoder, an epidemiologist with the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said the Louisiana cases are still being investigated to ascertain that the deaths did indeed result from exposure to treated tap water in neti pots, rather than exposure to untreated water in a pond or lake. If so, they are the first known incidences of the disease in the U.S. resulting from N. fowleri organisms surviving the water treatment process.
but yeah, if your water is at all dodgy....boil it first.

Crazy. I've had an awful cough for the past week or more (seems to be making the rounds in my family), so I finally got a neti pot! I'm happy to say that it was much easier to use amd way less uncomfortable than I'd expected. However, I don't notice any difference in my stuffy nose or drippy throat. Did I do something wrong? How often should I use it? Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge.

when I use my neti pot because of allergies/cold, I usually do it morning & night (sometimes an extra time in between and if I'm home). I typically start feeling improvement in a day or two. You're using a saline type solution, right? I buy those pre-measured packets for the neti pot. If you're not seeing an improvement, don't rule out a sinus infection. You may need antibiotics for that. Now that I've heard about those two deaths, I'm going to boil my water when I have to use my neti pot, even though our city water is supposed to be safe. Good luck with your cold!

A neti pot may help clear up a minor sinus infection, and it helps relieve cold symptoms. It clears out the nose in a gentle way ... no blowing and wiping. However, I've found it more helpful as a daily practice. It seems to prevent sinus infections (of which I have had many, many).

s: Try using your neti pot twice a day during your sniffles - in the morning and before bed. Also try gargling with mouthwash before bed to help prune back bacteria in your throat.
