Last weekend was my birthday and to celebrate we needed a whole lot of champagne glasses. I went through the cupboards and found 7 which just wasn't enough. We then thought we need more glasses but obviously this is a one off. We then had three options:
1. Buy more glasses
2. Buy some disposable glasses
3. Rent some glasses for the evening
3. Borrow
Well, we weighed up the options 1.buying was good and well, apart from costing money we would then need somewhere to store them.
2. Disposable - just more plastic for the landfill (and not really classy enough for the birthday).
3. Rent - we were too late to organise, plus cost and need to return items
4. Borrow - well once I asked a couple of friends it seemed that people have also had to buy glasses for just such an occasion. Well it was perfect because I borrowed the glasses and they were perfect!!!! and no extra clutter for our cupboards, because once they were cleaned the next morning, they were returned by lunchtime.
The other big item we saved on, was not needing plastic plates. Turned out when I counted through our little plates there were way more than needed for the evening, plus all the plates I put out didn't even get used! People were happy to use serviettes. Another win for us, with no extra plastic to landfill for the sake of it.
What things do you borrow off others to save clutter?
