it is new year's day here and we have begun with a flourish!
we've cleaned the entire place and a few things are OUT, despatched variously:
42 dvds for donation
22 dvds to return to lenders
some cables and connectors
a radio aerial
a metal stand for a bowl we bought in bangkok ten years ago (the bowl is used constantly, the stand, never)

I threw out some old food from the frig and some old receipts.

it's still '11 here (western canada), but i took a few bags to goodwill this afternoon and have a few more things to pass out at church tomorrow morning. i like finding specific homes for things before donating when possible - we have a few friends who are newly married with tight budgets and they cherish the hand-me-downs. sometimes it's the deciding factor for me in letting go of an item - knowing someone else will appreciate it so much more.
Only 8:35pm here in Oregon, but Happy New Year all.
Donation bin is full, time to start another. Contents from today include Christmas decorations, 8 t-shirts, a stack of books, and various bits and pieces collected throughout the house.
Happy New Year from the Pacific time zone! We're only about 15 mins from the New Year, so I decide to post my ATAD for the year. Trashed or donated:
- 12 bath toys: My kids are 6 and 7, so they don't tend to stay in the bath too long to play with toys much anymore
- broken shredder (replaced with new one)
- Cottonelle wipes container (replaced with new one)
- Shirt with sleeves too short for my daughter
- 3 baby washcloths
- small bag of embroidery thread
- Cottonelle hanger
- random wii toy
- tiny glass toy bottle of 7-up
- paper shredded using the new shredder

Stuff from the fridge, random miscellaneous stuff, packaging. Starting the year with a whimper, not a bang like bandicoot!!
I bought a few new shirts in December so after doing laundry yesterday I filled a large grocery bag (!!) with shirts that are less flattering than my new ones.
Since December was such a busy month I didn't do laundry for three weeks and at the end of it I felt like i had nothing to wear... but the closet is far from empty. So today before I fold and put away the clothes from laundry I will have a good look in the closet to see if I should get rid of anything as I saw those clothes as "nothing to wear".
Will drop the bag off to charity on Monday as getting rid of a bag always inspires me to start a new one. :)
Dh bullied me into clearing out my car with him. It was for his sake as I couldn't care less about driving a skip on wheels :) 3 bags of rubbish/recycling out, one bag of coins I meant to take to the bank last year emerged from under one seat, and now he has taken it off to be cleaned thoroughly. Oh well, it makes him happy...

Out: some expired left-overs from the fridge. I now have a clean fridge with a really good overview of what's hiding in there. Hopefully this will help me with my frugality/meal planning goal for January. I still need to do the same with the freezer and the pantry, though.

Pmsl, ninakk! A clean car is nice, just not very attainable when 2 kids are passengers and always discard clothes/gloves/food/crisp packets/water bottles/school notes! If they don't eat their afternoon snack on the move, they don't have time to eat after school and get grumpy at whatever activity they're going to. And I found 2 ties, a jumper, a McDonalds bag and quite a few other bits which were clearly dh's! So he's not exactly guilt free here :) He didn't get it cleaned as the place was shut, but I said I would do it this week.
Out: sneaked out a pair of trousers, age 3-4 years. Ds2 is nearly 7 and really skinny so they still fit fine, just they're more like Capris on him!
-Recycled 20 kilos worth of paper: mostly old note-books and work books our daughter did not want and did not want to bother finding takers for the unused items.(pity, but so it is)
-Made present tags from the parts of Xmas cards that could be used for that purpose.
Uncluttered some really tired-looking potatoes and a tiny parsnip into sort of a gratin dauphinois, with great success. Served with chicken in mustard sauce. Promptly ditched said dijon mustard afterwards. Mustard doesn't really go bad, but it loses a lot of its taste when it gets old. Also threw out a jar half-filled with doubtful-looking cornichons that had somehow escaped earlier purges.
My DH is taking an old printer to Goodwill tomorrow. Recycled some boxes. Filled a box with some decorative items that I have tried to Craigslist without success: a wooden chicken, a wooden guinea hen, a wooden Noah holding his ark, a wooden mask from Jamaica (hangs on the wall). I think I am ready to let all these go. Oh, a robotic dog and a pair of shoes my DD1 talked me into buying but I never wore (which is why I usually shoe shop alone!)
Trash - pair of hiking boots that are coming apart
Recycle- some gift boxes
Goodwill bag - a hoodie and shirt that are too small; a pair of shorts that DH bought me several years ago but never wore.
Freecycled - a car cassette to mp3 adaptor
To a friend - a counted cross stitch I bought years ago but never made - I loved that picture but the small linen material is too much eye strain for me; either she or one of her stitching group will bring it to life; also a bag of yarns to the same friend - her stitching group friends always take yarn donations.
my closet is looking roomy (almost sparse) - thanks for all your inspiring posts this New Year's Day.
Filed the contents of the filing tray that had a 3 month backlog in it, shredded and recycled things no longer needed from the files I put things into.
