Don't you hate how much cat fur collects in the vacuum and in the dryer filter? I swore I'd never have another long-haired cat, but 3 years ago when we were rescuing a kitten, it was the long-haired one that won my heart. :)

I cleaned out under the sink after my DH decided he didn't have what he needed to change out the faucet so he's waiting til we get back from vacation. He had emptied everything into a box (except the extra TP rolls which he put in a trash bag) so I was very selective what went back under. Also threw away 3-4 grungy sponges and some unsatisfactory hair products. It really wasn't as bad as I had thought, mostly needed rearranging. Looks lovelly now.

Out went a box of shabbat candles since I've strayed from the fold. Also a Duraflame crackle log. We bought two, and the first one crackled satisfactorily, but the fumes were terrible and made me woozy. And some pocket squares I made as gifts but never gave to the groomsmen at our wedding. Now I'm, um, uncluttering some magazines by whittling them down and scanning the photos I want to save.

This is my first post. I'm aiming to have at least one more thing going out than coming in each day. This can be any item no matter how small (other than packaging). I'm looking forward to joining you in decluttering my house in 2011.

    DAY 1 of 2011

    Tossed: 2 expired credit cards
    Recycled: 3 farm newsletters

    In: nothing

    YEAR TO DATE:
    Out: 5
    In: 0

Now I have a dileema today -0 i could declutter and tidy - but that would be avoiding my marking mountain.

My top decluttering tip - it always looks more attractive when you have more pressing, yet duller job!

Goodwill pile - 2 of those microwave plates to cook bacon or similar stuff on - may have used once, some assorted plastic storage food containers; couple of travel mugs; glass juice container; little toy Barbie dog; little ceramic figurine from Red Rose tea box; VHS movie; those popsicle molds.

Toss - broken mug - my favorite but even if I glue the handle on I'd be worried that it would come off while drinking hot coffee & dump it in my lap - so it's gotta go.

In - golf organizer for DH for his birthday 12/31 - already put together & in garage; it got all his & DS's golf bags/shoes/tees/balls & gizmos into an organized area instead of all over the garage.

good resolution Wendy! My dh has been chucking out (!!!) expired tins from the larder and they all appear to have come from my mum... Quite why she would bring me tinned lentils or whatever is beyond me.
A cup with no handle, a really crappy book MIL gave dh.

Basket of goodies over to a neighbor--she's going to be assembling a few baskets to raffle off for charity.

None of these things had ever been used and they've been sitting in a box I designated for gifts.

Basket from my baby shower for my daughter (almost 4 years ago!)
    Picture frames
    Teapot-for-one
    Mug with cocoa
    Some Christmas ornaments
    Bath/body stuff
    Cute notepads

@Ella - personally, I always wonder why my cat isn't bald.

OUT to the car, waiting for donation tomorrow - a stack of white cord rails - the kind that mount on the wall with a snap on cover to hide black TV cable. They were passed on to me and seemed like a good idea, since above mentioned fur-shedder also loves to chew on cords. But I have two small interior antennas, not regular cable, and both need to be wiggled around for different channels to come in correctly. So the covers never worked for me. I'll empty out the storage bench that holds my donation pile at the same time.

    Yesterday 1/1/11:

OUT: Another bag of clothes from my husband's closet. (yay!) About 10 plastic hangers. 6 Christmas ornaments. An old watch. A puzzle roll-up device. A suitcase with a broken handle. Our Christmas tree. And a huge pile of (inexpensive) jewelry that I'm finally ready to part with.

IN: A new xbox game for hubby, new undies for me. A duffle bag to replace the suitcase.

Bad start. Just back from hotel trip. The free gift bag for New Year contained some anti-stress wipes thingies, which I left behind, but also some things which DH insisted on bringing home, grrr. Candles and a wooden dish, which he can keep on his desk if he wants them. A notebook. We have hundreds. FFS. And a bottle of Christmas Beer which he will want to stash in a cupboard and then throw out next year - so I will make him try it tonight then pour it out! The rooms also had Xmas crackers in them so DD (5) collected various bits of tat that I shall try to dispose of ASAP. Plus MIL, despite being told NO GIFTS 20 million times gave DD a hideous keyring featuring a badly made teddy bear with crystals on it. Every time a crystal falls off, she cries...

Can you tell I am feeling rather cross? I should have kept the wipes!

Out: Christmas candle holder, old pillow cases
To Donate: a set of sheets, random pillow cases, and a curtain valance.

Charity, I hope your stress level goes down soon! :) Maybe your DD will forget about the hideous bear before too long, and it can become "lost."

A word of advice for those dealing with grandmothers (I am one, so I feel qualified to advise, and you know what they say about free advice, anyway). Instead of saying "no gifts" which, really, is very hard for us grandparents, how about picking a special book and telling grandma that DD or DS is really, really wanting this particular book. That gives her something to buy and wrap for her grandchild, and books are less clutter than cheap toys. Just a thought!

Out to recycling: 3 outdated software manuals and 1 outdated How-to-eBay book. Vow to self not to waste money on such books ever again; they're outdated by the time I get them home.

Thank you Happymonkey, I do that with my own mother and it works well. But MIL is a piece of work. She went to Paris in October, we said no clothes, so she bought the kids lots of underwear and vests "as that's not really clothes". New York in November, we said no shopping, she bought about 15 items of designer clothing, as "clothes are not shopping" and nagged endlessly to get us to dress the kids in them for Xmas and NY.

DD tells people "I have an English Grandma who plays with me and a Greek Yiayia who buys me stuff." How sad is that?

We've managed to finish the bookcase cleanup despite lots of unannounced visits. We got rid of 250 lbs of training material from my mom's professional association. Those we're using one full unit (we have 10 units). Two others unit were holding all our reference book. We got rid of most of them, keeping the equivalent of two shelves of book we actually use (dictionaries, cooking books, etc...). Then my mom's decided to get rid of all her stuff (pamphlet, maps and others books) from her trip to Europe in 1975. She kept her travel diary, a bag of money from the country she visited and the picture album from the trip. That cleared another shelf. We also have 300+ book to give away (a nice collection of geographic book is going to my boyfriend who asked for them, we offer the rest to family member and friends, what they won't take we will try to trade to the used bookstore and the rest will go to goodwill). We then cleared the top of the bookcases of all the randoms knick-knacks. We kept the most meaningful and got rid of two glass jar, five stuffed animals, another oil lamp and three unidentified trophies. A family friend took a big box full of frame for his painting class.

So now, all our book are in a proper upright position, not stacked one upon another and they are not all squeezed together . We have one unit empty and the other one is temporarily holding the books we are getting rid off. One of the now empty unit will be used to display my mother's frog collection (no no, not real ones) that is stored in the garage attic and the other unit will be used to hold my parents CD's and the books we borrowed from friends and family (some of them live far away and we see them maybe 2-3 times a year).

Cleaning the bookcase was the last step of the ''getting rid of stuff we inherited'' that came with my mom's being the last member on her family side. We got stuff from her parents and three aunts (two full households) in a very short period of time. It took us five years but we finally managed it and gain back precious space in our house.

    Happy new year everyone!

@arthelemis: that's a great job. You must feel amazing with that weight off your shoulders!

Lots done in the past 2 days.
    Donate:
    - 13 books
    - pair daughter's pants (too small)
    - soccer-shaped moneybox (son already has a car-shaped one)
    - 4 dice (or is die the plural? Never can remember)
    - outdoor food screen
    - ant farm (son's, tried it, ants didn't like it)
    - childrens' book plates
    - swap cards (kept the best ones from my childhood and am using them to cover a battered old desk, with a piece of glass on top - pretty)

Used up: scrapbook paper, Japanese Paper and old cards to make enough birthday cards for the year!

    Tossed: cracked small plate
    - decluttered card and wrapping bag of scrapbooking paper to make cards
    - bits of junk from the junk drawer (every cord is now labelled and stored neatly)

Because I've gotten rid of so many more books recently, I've 'sacrificed' a small bookshelf to house the childrens' art supplies and notebooks so their desk supposedly stays tidy, and so I can use it for my sewing machine as well. They have NO excuse now!!

This post makes me all warm inside, it is going to be a great year!

    1.1.2011:
Out: A nice pile of paper work that I finally went through. The pile to be shredded grew steadily as well.
Out: A bunch of pictures on the computer.

    2.1.2011:
Out: most of my user manuals collected since the 90's. Warranties also were cheerioed if old enough.
In: Selectively, electronical manuals were downloaded as replacement.
To do: Scan the few manuals that were not online, then chuck out. Scan a handful warranties to be archived, save originals.

To do: Great reminder, we are on our last vacuum bag and it is almost full of cat hair now.

    out: the millenium trilogy
i have a simple new strategy with books and it is working perfectly.
i finish a book and ask my husband, "will you want to read this at some stage?" and when he says, "no", i just immediately get rid of the books.
no more hanging onto them because he might change his mind!

out: almost-finished tin of goldfish food. my goldfish was grabbed by a bird out of the bowl in the garden months ago and i don't think i am getting another. if and when i do, he/she can have new food.

Not much uncluttering progress today, except for the normal load of paper detritus. And a packet of day-glo stickers a friend gave me for Christmas, into the Goodwill pile. Worked on other things, including making chili and coq au vin for meals later in the week.
