This cold weather is making me permanently ravenous! Just polished off the last of the chocolate truffles: I don't usually eat chocolate :)
How was your talk, susan?Posted 3 months ago # -

Lottielot: The speaker, Gary Taubes, was excellent and made a lot of sense. He says that the general consensus -- weight gain is basic thermodynamics -- more energy taken in than expended -- is, of course, true but doesn't tell us anything useful. What REALLY causes weight gain, he says, is how the body stores fat, which is regulated by insulin ie, whether it is directed to fat storage or energy. He's a science writer -- degree in physics from Harvard -- and had a lot of evidence to show this. Sugar, he says, sets the hormone out of whack, as do high glycemic carbs. I've put in a request for his latest book for my kindle via the library, but probably won't get it for months yet. Glad we went. The university where this was held is notoriously ugly for parking, but they did a really good job of reserving spaces for the community, so if they have other lectures like this we'd go. I don't think we'll change anything about the way we are eating -- we don't intentionally limit "starches", but since they have a relatively high WW point value, there's a natural limit. We don't eat much added sugar and the grains we eat are, for the most part, whole grains.
I've been hungry too -- eek!

Sounds interesting, susan :) I love going to lectures on different subjects (apart from my compulsory uni seminars, which are ridiculously complicated and you sit there thinking 'really? Do you actually think that getting 2 people to judge the contrast of stripes on a screen tells you anything useful about social interaction?'
My veg box is overflowing, I need to have a big cooking session to use some up. I just downloaded an app which looks very useful: http://www.riverford.co.uk/pages/riverford_iphone_app
and I found a parsnip and apple fritter recipe, both of which I'm drowning in! I think I may make a bunch of different things and stick them in the freezer for busy nights.Posted 3 months ago # -
We like going to lectures as well. The next interesting one, at a different university, features the founder of Kiva.
Just announced than San Antonio, which for several years as been at the top of the list of Men's Health Magazine "Fat City" poll, is now #25 on the list of FIT cities. I give myself total credit for that :) Well . . . that and a mayor who has made it a priority.
Looks like the weather is fine today (although a bit nippy) so we will go on another 10K volksmarch this morning. And then I need to get my snap peas planted. I should put in some lettuce too.

SA, like Houston, is maybe a fat city because there are such great restaurants, air-conditioned all year, making eating out a sport, esp. in summer.

Today, Day 350/R3-d140-phase3d107=phase4d87: + 6.8 from the tons of funn noodle soup w/ hoisin sipping sauce yesterday so doing a steak/apple day today ... (new base wt = wt on last day of taking the drops) Still high high stress and unfinished business and just stuff and lots of it.
Day 93 of 5-HTP - suspending 5-HTP for a bit since I just started the holistic program. Got some from costco - did go and picked up so much bulk food and Justin Case stuff - that's why I stopped membership before. I mean great products and great prices but do I need or want 10 lbs of apples? Actually, on this food plan, I do, esp good ones ... Got some steak, apples, 5HTP, CoQ10, gluten free crackers, marinated artichokes which I split w/ my friend for 1/2 of her regular crackers, diet Coke. Then even if it's "cheap" you have to buy in bulk so it starts to really add up and the bill at the end is a lot. You see I'm weighing whether to join again or not ... That red velvet cake for ten dollars or so is enormous, and supposed to be terrific ... shall I join so that I can go pick one up when the feeling strikes ... and then have just a bit to taste it for myself and then give the rest away ... sheesh ...
Day 43 of supplements from HP. Saw HP and got newest results and some old some new supplements. HP's putting in a kangan water thing in that we can go get kangan water from. HP didn't say this but I'm thinking HP'll probably start selling the machine to us ... it's expensive! Said something about can get the water from him and then later get our own machine ...
susanintexas: thanks for the information and link (tho the livestream was over by the time i saw it, shucks). Wished I could have gone too. It agrees with what I've found about my own self. Sugar and [high glycemic] carbs make a big dif for moi. And my avaunt-guard physician believes that it causes wt gain, at least for himself. Diabetes runs in my family so I may have that genetic disposition and then too diet must play a large part in how much insulin is released and how resistent to it one is and how much is stored as fat and how much is converted to energy.

NTCH: We've tried Costco and the quantities are just too large for us. There were a few food items I really liked -- like their olive tapenade -- but it is a HUGE jar.
Went on a 10K walk today in a planned community with lots of natural areas. It is for adults age 55+, and DH and I had a nice conversation about whether that would be a good move for us way in the future. Well, not that way far :)

Just back from the grocery store. This week's menu:
Today (Sunday): Going to try to make corn fritters without using too much oil, served with pork tenderloin on the grill and asparagus, big tossed salad. The asparagus is on sale for $1.48 a lb.! I LOVE asparagus.
Monday: Sweet potato and Kale soup with mock Reubens (made with turkey.) Will make the soup today.
Tuesday: I'm teaching, so it's Subway sandwich for me & DH is eating out.
Wednesday: Coq au vin. It's cooking now. Will serve over whole wheat gnocchi with a big salad.
Thursday: I'm going to try to see Maxine Hong Kingston -- another free lecture -- but it doesn't start til 7 so shouldn't interfere with dinner. DH might not be interested. Will make a casserole with cheese and potato pirogi, cauliflower, alfredo sauce and a little bit of ham, lots of other vegetables. Tried this a few weeks ago and it was a bit hit.
Friday: Pizza! We have one frozen crust in the freezer that we can split. Anchovies on my side only :) And a REALLY big salad.

Today, Day 351/R3-d141-phase3d108=phase4d88: + 6.8, down .8 from yesterday even with eating crackers at 4 or 5 am then going back to sleep (new base wt = wt on last day of taking the drops) Still high high stress and unfinished business and just stuff and lots of it.
Day 94 of 5-HTP - suspending 5-HTP for a bit since I just started the holistic program.
Day 44 of supplements from HP.
susanintexas: i love lots of costco items - very delicious - but so much. love that olive tapinade too! Amy Tan ... livestreaming? Same link?
today: wedding reception for lunch - will see what's on the menu - it'll probably be a big feast of a b-- a-- buffet ... If they have blue cheese I'll have some of it with roast beef ... we'll see what's on the menu. The father of the groom, my uncle, is a particularly generous man and his son likes to eat ... will report back ...
this week's menu:
sometime, ling ling dumplings cooked in chicken turnip clear soup and dipping sauce of red vinegar and chili/garlic paste.
sometime, steak w/ blue cheese
sometime, apples
sometime, Genesis 1:29 bread toasted with Monterey jack cheese melted on it and mincemeat
sometime, 1 last waffle w/ honey and maybe baked eggs
valentine's day - honey cake :)

NTCH: The Maxine Hong Kingston talk is being hosted by Gemini Ink, a local writing nonprofit. Don't think it will be streamed. You reminded me I need to bring something to the class for Valentine's day -- maybe CHOCOLATE. But honey cake sounds like a good possibility . . .

Monday weigh in, down 3 pounds -- hooray! This makes a total of 71.4 lbs. since 3 Jan 2011. (but last Monday it was UP 2 lbs. so I'm not feeling complacent.) I pulled out my old journals and it's taken almost 4 months to lose these last 10 lbs. Still another 5-10 lbs to go, but I would be happy to stay exactly where I am for the rest of my life :) I'd like to have the rest gone by the beginning of May, though, so that I can get some summer clothing and know they will fit all summer.

My 'limit added sugar' plan has had an interesting effect - I'm actually less hungry than I was when I ate sugary snacks any old time. I'm also more mindful of what I'm eating.
Also, another part of my plan (to eat less than DH) has not been as hard as I expected, especially when it came to dishing up last night's lasagne. Normally I'd be wanting 'my half'. Last night I had less than half and didn't feel hungry afterwards or have a huge desire to go back for more. (When I say 'half', I mean half of a third since a lasagne gives us each 3 portions.)
However, it will be interesting to see how I feel tomorrow. It was my birthday today so there was cake with icing and dinner out (included two alcoholic, sugary drinks). As part of my new eating plan, I want celebrations to be a bit more 'special' with treat foods (such as cake and sugary drinks) that I normally wouldn't otherwise eat / drink, instead of it being forgotten because I eat those things everyday. This is to get back that sense of anticipation that I had when I was growing up - we really looked forward to birthday parties because it meant cake! softdrink! lollies! even if we did have to eat something 'healthy' e.g. a sandwich first.
I went to the gym this morning. According to the scales there I lost 2kg over the past week. I'll take that with a grain of salt though since I haven't noticed much difference in flab. I also can't remember if I'd eaten lunch before going last Monday (probably had). Oh, well, I'll keep an idle check on it once a week.
So after the gym this morning I did the grocery shopping and bought fruit & veg. Then at lunch time I was listening to the radio and heard the Midday Interview with Margaret Throsby on ABC Classic FM. Today's guest talked about wild-foods vs cultivated foods and how most commercial fruit and veg has been cultivated to have a lower fibre content and a much higher water and sucrose content. The side effect of this is a related drop in nutrients such that they aren't as good for you as they used to be and, to add insult to injury, they have a higher GI than they used to.
Not only that but the recommended F&V intake is now not 7 portions (how much is a portion?) of F&V (2 fruit, 5 veg) a day but 11! This is because of the drop in nutrients.
You can listen to the interview here:
http://www.abc.net.au/classic/content/2012/02/13/3429157.htmThis news made me a bit depressed after I had bought all that 'lovely' F&V. Sigh.

Laetitia: The lecture we went to last week supports your experience -- sugar is the devil :) It messes with your insulin level, which affects both hunger levels and fat storage. I'll have to listen to that podcast -- disturbing that all the good stuff is being filtered out of fruits & veg. I've been reading Barbara Kingsolver's "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle," about eating local foods grown by people you know, and she says much the same thing.
And most fruit and veg servings are a half cup. A "regular" banana is actually two fruit servings. At least according to weight watchers.

I will be joining this thread again soon. Now that I've uncluttered the stressful job and gained 2 hrs/day from not commuting, I hope to put that time toward exercise and more conscientious eating....
Posted 3 months ago # -
While my exercises have been going well my diet has not been the best. Too many "cheat" meals and days and it shows on the scale. So for the next months I will eat less calories and lower my carb intake. I too feel a difference in losing weight when I eat carbs (rice, pasta, breat etc. - after all there are carbs in fruit and veg too), especially in the evening. But I have a hard time limiting them - much more so then sugar. I do crave something sweet every now and then but often a small piece of dark chocolate will do the trick.
I used to use sweetener but after being very hungry all the time (it might be the exercise too) I have cut them out and also diet sodas. Haven't noticed that much of a difference but will keep doing it for a while.
