Workspace of the Week: Bright and in the basement

This week’s Workspace of the Week is Michelle.the.last.nameless’ basement office:

Yes, you read it correctly, this is a basement office. The light color carpet on the floor, the white wood furniture, and the pale blue (or maybe it’s lilac?) paint on the walls helps immensely to brighten this space and make it an inviting office. The five large canvas images add personality to the room without taking up space on the work surface. Camera bags, flashes, papers, and pens all have a place to live on the bookshelves. And, I love that even the trash can is out of the way, but conveniently located under the desk. In Michelle’s notes, she mentions that her husband’s desk is identical to hers, adjoins to the left side of her desk, and sits in the next corner of the room. It looks like a wonderful setup for a shared office. Thank you, Michelle.the.last.nameless for your inspiring submission to our Flickr pool.

Want to have your own workspace featured in Workspace of the Week? Submit a picture to the Unclutterer flickr pool. Check it out because we have a nice little community brewing there. Also, don’t forget that workspaces aren’t just desks. If you’re a cook, it’s a kitchen; if you’re a carpenter, it’s your workbench.

That it’s a half basement with ground level full windows makes a bigger difference.

Agreed, the full windows make a huge difference. The same room, with the typical, dinky little basement windows would definitely not have the same feel. Paint colours and decor can help, but they only go so far; they can’t create natural light.

I love the canvas prints; and the b/w portrait (second from the right) is absolutely breathtaking.

Thanks for featuring my room. To Mo and Anita, yes it’s a half basement… however I need to point out that built over that window outside is a deck. That room was pretty dark. We used gloss bright white paint on the ceiling and semi gloss on the walls to really bounce the light around. We also added 4 bright halogen lights in the ceiling.

The next room in our basement has the same window (with No deck built over it) but darker brown flat paint and less lighting and it feels like a cave.

There’s a lot of be said for good lighting and bright, reflective paints. :)

Michelle! I need to copy your office! We are about to move and my husband will be working from home so we need a desk with storage now, and I love the corner desk look! Also, my husband has portfolio binders for his 2 different jobs that he likes to just throw on the desk, so those side white shelves would be amazing so I can keep my sanity and he can have an open surface to put them on. Can you please share where you bought the desk and the little white shelves?? I will send you cookies if you do! (well, probably not because you’d have to give your address and you probably don’t want to do that online :) waiting with my fingers crossed … <3 Tammy

Beautiful office Michelle! Could you tell me where you had the canvas prints made? I would love to to that with a few of my photos.

I love it! The office is organized and uncluttered, yet manages to still have plenty of personality. I love the blue walls and the teal chair – those colors give the office a very soothing feel.

I think the desk could be Pottery Barn Bedford

I had looked at it in the store and loved it but not the price tag. There was/is a website that shows/teaches how to build a very similar style (almost exact) that I found when I was looking at alternatives. Will look it up in my bookmarks if you’re a DIYer. Otherwise, head over to PB. Sometimes you can score a display unit from their store.

try Target for the white Carson 3 shelf bookcase

don’t know if it is the one in the picture above, but it is close enough. Good luck

Yes, Leonie is right on both counts. The desk is from Pottery Barn and kind of pricey (but worth every penny) however my friend picked up the identical PB desk on Craigslist for a fraction of the price. :) The bookshelves are from Target.

The canvases are from Smugmug. They are 20×20 inch.

Thanks for all the kind comments. :)
