Workspace of the Week: Stand up, sit down, work, work, work!
This week’s Workspace of the Week is Mushroom Princess’ dual function workspace:
There are so many things to love about this week’s workspace feature. The most obvious is the way that it combines a standing height desk on the left with a sit-down space on the right. The shelf on the bottom of the desk, when combined with the higher chair, gives space for the worker to rest her feet while working at the sit-down computer. (I’m assuming the desk owner is female only because of the word Princess in the account name. My apologies if this assumption is incorrect.) Beyond the stand-sit combination, the single bookshelf is visually appealing and extremely practical. The wall-mounted speakers behind the larger monitor free up important desk space. All materials stored below the desk are in containers so as not to create a visual mess. There appears to be a metal strip behind the large monitor that papers are adhered to or the wall is painted with magnetic paint — both of which are fantastic ideas. Both workspaces have terrific task lighting. And, my favorite thing about the desk is that the drawers are asymmetrical. It’s an interesting desk that is perfectly sized for the space. Thank you, Mushroom Princess, for submitting your fabulous workspace to our Flickr pool.
Want to have your own workspace featured in Workspace of the Week? Submit a picture to the Unclutterer flickr pool. Check it out because we have a nice little community brewing there. Also, don’t forget that workspaces aren’t just desks. If you’re a cook, it’s a kitchen; if you’re a carpenter, it’s your workbench.

High desk and high chair for standing and sitting is indeed a fantastic idea. I would want to have that. The only objection I can think of at the moment is that there seem to be no high office chairs. Most high chairs are like barstools, which are not very comfortable if you do sit on them for a longer period.

@1tba — I’m fairly certain my desk chair, which is touted as being ergonomic, adjusts to bar height. It at least goes high enough that my feet can’t touch the ground, and I’m 5’9″. It’s a Freedom Task Chair by Humanscale: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obi.....tterer-20/

Is this the correct photo? The left-hand space looks like a second sit-down desk. The keyboard and screen would have to be quite a bit higher to serve as a standing desk.
Would love my work space to be that neat…

@Dune — I think the entire desk is at standing height, there is just a bar-height chair on the right.

I really like this. I’ve read that people who stand to work are much healthier or live longer (forgive me for forgetting the exact details) than people who sit to work. I like the place to rest your feet when sitting, as mine “go to sleep” and tingle if I sit at a diner counter or bar stool table very long.
My husband is an architect and has always been interested in comfortable, well functioning office seating. (You won’t believe the number of office chairs I’ve sat in and critiqued in furniture showrooms to tell him how various chairs feel for my 5’6″ frame vs his 6’0″ frame.) He just said that there aren’t many good office chairs that will go to this height. I’m anxious to show him your chair, Erin.
Cool looking space, Mushroom Princess! I also like the books facing out.

I love this desk/table. Any idea where I can get it? We like the idea and comfort of a higher desk and barstool height chairs.

Can’t see much of the chair, but looks similar to the IKEA Franklin (folding bar stool with back). – Which now seems missing from their website…?! I was just in an IKEA 2 months ago and sat in the chair for pete’s sake!

The last office I worked at had several office style chairs that raised to stool height. A good office furniture store should have or be able to order for you. Not the cheapest chair out there, but comfortable.

I’m especially taken with the little book bar and the lighting. They’re handy and visible, but not in the way.

Hello,
here is the owner of the desk. I am sorry for the late reply. Thank you all for the response!
We have bar stools from ikea. They are perfectly fine for sitting on for a reasonable amount of time. But I think that is personal.
Further more, we wanted our desk not to be so wide. Because our house is pretty small and we need our space to be efficiently organised. This way you can multitask this unit. We like to stand and check our mail for a minute or sometimes just hang out for a longer period in front of the computer. This way, we combine our work and time in a relaxed way.
The small book bar also holds my macbook so when I want to have a coffee and look through a magazine I can just chuck that up there. It is out of my way.
Also, under the desk, you can’t see it, but there are small boxes for our wires and cables. And also inane junk I can’t just yet throw away.
The iMac is facing our open kitchen, so you can watch some movies from the kitchen.
