Workspace of the Week: Serene home office
This week’s Workspace of the Week is Zach’s setup:
This office instantly caught my attention because the majority of the external peripherals are identical to the ones I have. After looking at it for a minute, I realized that it does a nice job of keeping clutter at bay. The cable control is solid, the rolling file cart holds necessary supplies so they don’t take up space on the desk surface, and the arrangement of the artwork is even calming. I strongly suggest you go to see the original image in the Flickr pool because the notes on it are extensive. Thank you, Zach, for your terrific submission to our pool.
Want to have your own workspace featured in Workspace of the Week? Submit a picture to the Unclutterer flickr pool. Check it out because we have a nice little community brewing there. Also, don’t forget that workspaces aren’t just desks. If you’re a cook, it’s a kitchen; if you’re a carpenter, it’s your workbench.

Very nice! However, the feng shui folks would encourage you to have your back against the wall, not facing it. Most of my clients find they need some sort of organizer on their desk – like a vertical step rack – for active papers.

I like the arrangement of photos and images you get to see, very easily, from your seat. The center monitor works like another picture on the wall.
Inspiring!

Lisa Zaslow:
Besides feng shui, I find it simply easier to concentrate when I can see people entering the room. No matter what I’m doing, the feeling that someone could sneak up on me keeps me distracted and constantly looking over my shoulder.
Personally I’m not a fan of the photo arrangement above but to each their own. I do like the ornamental… is that cat grass? The ornamental plants. I’m a big houseplant fan. They’re an easy way to keep a room grounded and add colour and they juxtapose really well with technology. I work in computing, but constantly staring at the glow of a monitor and hearing a desktop fan seems so… artificial. Koyaanisqatsi–hopi for “life out of balance”. Plants, I find, help restore that balance.
Just my two cents

Well, the physical workspace might be neat and organized, but the electronic workspace certainly isn’t. Icons do not belong on your desktop, folks.

Seems very unrealistic. Where’s the stuff being worked on? office supplies(paper clips, stapler, post-its, etc); etc. And the file space is miniscule. I’m working on a number of projects that require lots of file cabinet space (family genealogy, science curricula, etc.)Is this a real office space?

@Lisa Thanks! Unfortunately with the layout of my apartment it is not feasible for me to turn my desk around. :\ I also don’t have any active papers. I use the snapscan to turn all my papers digital and shred the originals.
@Krissy Thanks for the compliments
@Anonymous I have no idea what the top plant is. The reason the plants on the second shelf are fake is because I unfortunately was not blessed with a green thumb
@Devilinthedetails I agree my desktop does need a bit of a reorganization.
@Peggy There is a pencil holder next to the X-Files mug on the left. It holds all my writing utensils, which I rarely use. I try and keep everything electronic. I use my snapscan + evernote to organize all of my papers/projects. Yes this is a real home office space. I am sitting at it currently.

@Debbie It’s actually an X-Files mug. From the old sci-fi TV show. I am a bit of a geek.

Nice setup! What size photos are those and where did you get the frames?
