A very stylish document scanner
In celebration of its 50th anniversary, the Fujitsu company has released a ScanSnap unit with a traditional lacquered finish, but — and this is the painful part — it appears to only be available in Japan:
The S-1300 and S-1500 units can fold up to look like a decorative box on your desk, which is as clever as it is beautiful. Fujitsu announced the commemorative document scanners by way of a manga advertisement, and you can see both pages of the advertisement online: Pages 1 and 2.
In addition to the stylish new exterior, it looks like the 50th anniversary ScanSnap models might also come with two tea cups and a sushi mat (although, I don’t think the raven is included):
Now, I’m crossing my fingers and hoping the Fujitsu company considers releasing decorative models in more markets. To learn more about getting your paper clutter under control with the help of a ScanSnap, check out our article “Scanning documents to reduce paper clutter.”
Happy anniversary, Fujitsu! And, thanks go to reader Jen for letting us know about this item.

Looks great, but kind of expensive for a scanner, thats somewhere in the ballpark of 1800 Euros (~2200 Dollars(?))

@Alexander — It’s HOW MUCH? Wow!! That’s ridiculous. My new hope is that if they release decorative versions in the States that the price is just a few bucks more than the regular models.

My favorite part is the manga advertising campaign. Ads that don’t look like ads! Fun!

I was wondering recently if there’s such thing as a portable scanner?
I’ve been using Canon AIO printer to do scanning.
Not very convenient if I’m out of house.

yeah, expensive. at today’s exchange rate that is US$2375 and US$3563. of course, today’s exchange rate is really bad. in more reasonable times (but still bad rate to me), it would’ve been $1667 for the cheaper model ($1=Y120 days). the bird’s an eagle by the way, steller sea eagle. funny that on the japanese site, the users are commenting that it’s so expensive that it’s for rich foreigners hahahahaa. so don’t think this is what japanese use, totally an extravagant piece. i’m a bit illiterate but i think even in the comic at the end the girl is saying it’s expensive but the others say you can win it in a contest so she thinks she will enter.

This is the kind of thing that, if money were no object, I would be all over. Functional and suits my decor? I’m in!
However, money IS an object. Which is why I just sneak my personal scanning jobs at the office machine next to me.

It feels like their greenhouse melons. In which they are deliberately overpriced. I’m sure it will be primarily purchased as gifts.

Appears that you can order them outside of Japan. You have to call to order one, and I read somewhere else it takes two months for them to make it!

But once you see the price tag, you won’t want it anymore!

For that price, I can purchase a small inexpensive flatbed scanner, slap a five-buck laptop skin on it, and set the scanner in the bookshelf.

A couple of things:
This isn’t manga advertisement. It’s actually a manga newspaper article. Yes, just as in the U.S., young people are no longer reading newspapers. One Japanese solution was to present the news entirely in manga format. This two page spread is an “article” in their tech section.
The actual product announcement is here:
http://scansnap.fujitsu.com/jp/product/s1500aw/
It’s a small production limited to 25 pieces each. Each piece is produced by a master craftsman applying multiple layers of urushi lacquar and the gold decorations by hand using a centuries old technique. The labor intensiveness of the process is reflected in the expected two-months-to-delivery window. The price reflects the artistry and skill involved.
That said, why anyone would want to apply such artistry and skill to a scanner is beyond me.

For that price, imagine how bad you’d feel if you accidentally chipped or damaged the surface?
While I *do* appreciate the visual beauty of the re-mortgage-your-house scanner, I don’t see the need to “disguise” technology items; they are what they are! It reminds me of hiding one’s TV inside an antique armoire!

This is a great scanner. OCR can be used to scan documents to provide ‘paperless office’ solutions for businesses allowing comprehensive Document Management systems to be integrated with existing Management Software. This allows for rapid Document retrieval and work flow.
