Workspace of the Week: Multiple monitor productivity

This week’s Workspace of the Week is ShaneRounce’s web-programming desk:

I chose this desk strictly for its impressive monitor configuration. The monitor on the left rotates between the horizontal and vertical positions. From Shane:

The rotated External Monitor makes it easier to navigate my way through chunks of code whilst using my iMac Display for testing and Design related things.

I love seeing examples of people putting their hardware to work for them, instead of their hardware dictating how work is done. I also like seeing people use multiple monitors to help boost their productivity. Thank you, Shane, for your submission to our Flickr group.

Want to have your own workspace featured in Workspace of the Week? Submit a picture to the Unclutterer flickr pool. Check it out because we have a nice little community brewing there. Also, don’t forget that workspaces aren’t just desks. If you’re a cook, it’s a kitchen; if you’re a carpenter, it’s your workbench.

Wow…very clean and pretty, even. But with that many monitors, is this a remote nuclear power station operation desk? ;)

    Best,

Unless he that code updates Facebook looks like he is goofing off on TWO of his monitors… ;)

I’m a fan of using multi-monitors for this exact form of work – gathering together and assembling information for a final result. I liken it to someone in a library doing a research paper with books open everywhere, turned to the correct pages, but the notepad in the middle is the final repository for all the knowledge being gathered and assembled. (Yes, I’m dating myself a bit, but you get the point.)

Unfortunately, I’ve seen this done poorly too. Once, I walked into a client’s office who had two monitors. One had his e-mail up and the other was streaming a basketball game – mid-day!

I loved the idea of having my laptop hooked with 2 big monitors. When I tried to do that last year, there were some technical constraints that prevented me from doing that (forgot what exactly though). I am curious about how the 2 monitors are physically connected with the laptop in the picture.

What is the manufacturer of the vertical monitor, shown in the photo?

I use this often, I connect my laptop with my lcd tv or another monitor. What makes my work easier is the Gridvista from acer it allows me to drag pages unto a new monitor.

Fong, i don’t think the monitors are hooked to the laptop. Otherwhise he wouldn’t have extra keyboard+mouse. Can’t see any cables either.
Dont’t know about mac but on windows the 9600M (same gfx card as macbook pro) can only drive 2 monitors, either laptop display + 1 external or just 2 external.

I love the use of the vertical monitor for coding.
