@Julia: I do a 10-minute tidy up every evening right when I come in the door and it’s done great things for both my mood and the quality of my living space.

It’s really amazing how much you can get done in 10 minutes, and I actually enjoy doing it now. It also helps me to get out of work mode and into home mode. I feel much more relaxed when I’m finished.

I’m not sure how well the right-when-you-come-home 10-minute tidy up would work for someone with kids, but as a single person with nobody else demanding my attention, it works great!

I think I may set a 10-minute “PEEP” reminder on my iTouch…10 minutes every evening of running around putting stuff where it belongs, until I’m either caught up, or I’ve retrained myself to put things away, da**it!

I hate that the “PEEP” sign is written in Comic Sans. That font ruins everything it touches.

I’m so glad that Erin decided to share this with everyone who reads the Unclutterer blog. I was hopeful when I sent the link that it might make its way onto the blog, but was tickled to see my suggestion today! I am so inspired by Paul Levy and his vision for BIDMC, and he is truly an “unclutterer”. Working in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement, I’ve observed that the vast majority of hospitals struggle to eliminate clutter as it manifests within a clinical environment. “Uncluttering” our hospitals is paramount to the quality of care delivered to patients.

It’s nice to see that even hospitals can take advantage of the simple PEEP mantra.

It’s also a pun on the PEEP used in ventilators/respirators in ICU’s. Positive End Expiratory Pressure. PEEP. Clever usage here though!

As someone who does that sort of LEAN transformation for work I believe I’ll be taking that PEEP thing. Haven’t seen it in any books/journals before, though I use the phrase every day! Love it.
