A brief word on political banner ads

Many readers have emailed us today to complain about the content of some political banner ads running on this site over the last few days. Most of the banner ads and all of the RSS ads for this site are served by Google Adsense without any direct overview by us.

We found many of these ads to be offensive enough that we have set our Adsense preferences to now block all political ads from running on this site. We haven’t made a permanent decision, but, at the very least, we are doing this until the end of this election season in the United States.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind those of you with a service or product that might be of interest to our readership that we sell banner ads on our site directly at a significant savings over the cost of purchasing them through Adsense.

I guess your blocker doesn’t work as there is an add at the bottom of your post!

Out of curiosity, how did you block just the political ads?

You mean those Gay Marriage ads were being seen globally? I thought that adsense was targeting them to Maine audiences (where a ballot question similar to California’s proposition 8 last year is about to be voted on). This makes the ads seem like a waste to be spread to such a wide audience.

I was suprised to see the anti-gay marriage ads here, but not that I felt that you had andything to do with it. I know that its a computer serving up advertising, not being individually reviewed. It was that I’ve been nothing but tons of pro gay marriage ads online and the anti- ones in your RSS fieed were the first ones I’ve seen this election season.

@Wellington Grey – Adsense now allows you to block certain categories of ads.

It’s weird, I’ve never seen an ad on unclutterer ever. Not that I’m complaining, haha. I always get confused when people post about the ads, I end up searching the entire page to find it, lol.
