What an awesome solution! I also sleep in a loft bed (a studio apartment was all I could afford in Sydney and lofts give some semblance of privacy). I have a Tromso bed and since my ceilings are 2.5 metres instead of Ikea's ideal of 3 metres, I ended up shortening the metal legs with a hacksaw sot hat I could comfortably sit up in bed. Will definitely be using that dual monitor hack for when I want to wow from bed ;)

Thanks Dawn! And the inside of my car is neat, although not as neat as my room. I feel that the neatness is proportional to the amount of time spent at either place. I spend a lot of time at my house in my room and only a little in my car. But it is clean :)

Jobinana: Thank you for your complements. As a broke college student who still likes things to be aesthetically pleasing, DIY is definitely the way to go. Heck, I'll probably even favor DIY once I'm out of school with a job. As for the closeness of the bed to the ceiling, it isn't really a problem anymore. At first it was weird, but as sleeping is really the only thing I do up there, save for watching The Office, it fits my needs perfectly. I'd rather have more room at my desk where I spend much more time than in my bed where I am conscious only a fraction of the time. It does make waking up for 8am's almost impossible, I assure you :) (Especially 8am income tax classes, what was I thinking?)

Thank you all for your kind words!

Excellent room. Not only is it surprising to find such a well-organized and designed college dorm, but the ingenuity of using DIY projects to furnish the room is also very inspiring. The only thing I would change is the height of the bed to the wall (just thinking that anyone sleeps in that space makes me uncomfortable).

Aaron: After your comment back to jfb3 and duucfho now I KNOW I love you! :)

Is the inside of your car this neat, too?

Best wishes with your college years!

I'm glad you all seem to like it! I'm kind of amazed that Unclutterer chose my room as the Workspace of the Week, it's a cool feeling.

@Michelle, the lights are one of my favorite features. I've just added a better picture so you can see them properly. Check them out here, there are 6 lights total. http://www.flickr.com/photos/aarondfrancis/3776143696/in/photostream/

@Christie I don't know if it's really an obsession, as much as an admiration. I think James Dean is cool and it makes nice neutral art for my wall. You have to admit, James Dean IS pretty cool... Right?

@jfb3 & @duucfho Haha you aren't the first people to think that. Fortunately, this isn't a concern of mine as I am waiting to get married to do.. work.

@Dawn F Thanks! The chair is Ikea (as is most of the room :) and is wonderful for reading and / or drinking tea.

This is great! And the other pictures revealed three small lights mounted on the underside of the bed frame, which provide light without taking up desk space. Admirably efficient!

With a room that neat, "work" could easily be accomplished by moving the mattress to the floor. I wish this were one of my kid's college rooms!

@jfb3

lol, very true. i've built many lofts in my various college rooms, and they were all around 50%-60% of the 8'-9' room height. plenty of room underneath for a desk with a hutch. sure, you have to crouch to enter/exit the bottom area, but at least you can sit up in bed up top. (or have room for two)

18" from the ceiling is not enough room to...work.

Just looked at this guy's other photos - I think I love him! (Ok, my hubby won't appreciate that comment.) WOW! I have never seen such a well-organized and clean college guy in my life. Neat chair and side table! Great artwork and family pics, too! Nice job, college dude! :)

18 inches above the bed, he obviously doesn't have a girlfriend, and didn't plan for one.

Mounting the monitor above the bed was a great idea. No worries about where to put a clock or TV!
