Workspace of the Week: Metro mini
This week’s Workspace of the Week is RunningDive’s small solution:
I chose this office because it truly surprised me. Almost every horizontal surface in the room is created with Metro shelving. This setup is easy to move and easy to configure however its owner needs it.
The printer and two shelves appear to be on a stand on the left-hand side of the desk, providing for additional storage. The filing cabinet looks to be the cream color box under the television. There is task lighting, overhead lighting, and wonderful light pouring in through the windows. And, for being an office, it blends in wonderfully with the other decor in this efficiency. (If I’m not mistaken, the couch is a pull-out and the coffee table is on casters to easily be moved. Also, brilliant.)
In the comments, he explained how he made the hanging bicycle rack:
I drilled a hole into the ceiling, and inserted an anchor bolt that expands when you tighten it, there is an eye hook on the end. And voila, bike hangs.
Thank you, RunningDive, for submitting your photo to our workspace pool. It’s a very well-organized space.
Want to have your own workspace featured in Workspace of the Week? Submit a picture to the Unclutterer flickr pool. Check it out because we have a nice little community brewing there. Also, don’t forget that workspaces aren’t just desks. If you’re a cook, it’s a kitchen; if you’re a carpenter, it’s your workbench.

OMG–I think that’s the same blue-flowered upholstery fabric that was on my parents’ old sofa! Too funny!
I love the use of the Metro shelving components. I’ve had several shelving pieces over the years, and they are just cool industrial-looking pieces that never look outdated to me, never show any damage and always can be easily changed in height and width for whatever purpose comes up.
(And I’m really glad of the timing of this photo, because I was thinking I really needed a coffee table in my finished basement, where my largest InterMetro shelving piece is (I’ll split it in 2– to make 2 units have as high, just by cutting the uprights in half with a tube-cutter). Now I know I can just repurpose an InterMetro kitchen cart to make a table–by just taking the handles off and adding wheels! Very cool!)
Now: Tell us more about the paint treatment!

I really love this one – stuff is still in view but contained. It’s not sterile, but it’s not a cluttered mess. I am slightly bothered by the two shelves under the window – they don’t seem to be even.

BTW, RunningDive.ca is not work friendly.

That is the ugliest sofa I have ever seen. They invested in the TV, I think they should invest in a sofa.

I like the sofa.

I like it! Yay, a WofW with color! I love the green wall – I could not live in an all white space, that would be so drab.

You do get the unevenness shelf problem with the Metro shelving (you can’t attach 2 shelf holders at the same point on the posts), but I have seen S-hook connectors, made by Metro, on the Web for this situation. I’ve never tried them, though, and for books, I’d be wary that it could hold the weight of what’s on the shelves. Looks like our WoW person is storing DVDs on them–so if you try them, they might work fine! So the options with Metro are you can either get 2 additional posts or just have the shelves uneven. One costs money, the other doesn’t.
(and let’s not hate on the sofa–it’s probably quite comfy and came cheap, allowing our WoW person to spend money on the good stuff!)

Niiice place. Everything nice and tidy.

Metro shelving can hold up to 800 lbs per shelf and the s connectors allow for the same weight support

Very organized but cluttered. That right corner wall space is hardly being used. Excellent idea for the bike storage though. Tripod and ladder should be compacted if not in use

Actually I believe the small cream box under the TV is a mini fridge, not a filing cabinet.

@Jen — Why would someone have a mini-fridge in an efficiency? The kitchen is literally right behind the couch. I assumed it was a filing cabinet because I couldn’t see a plug or a hinge. The orange thing in the upper left-hand corner is a sticker in the shape of an arrow. That would be hysterical if it were a mini-fridge.

@BMY — This place has no clutter that I can see. I think that the step ladder and tripod are fine, especially if he is constantly pulling them out to use them. You are saying that his space isn’t a minimalist dwelling, which it’s not. Uncluttered and minimalist aren’t the same thing. I don’t see any mess and everything has a place. It’s great!

Your exactly right Erin. Which gives me another idea, lets start a minimalist Space of the Week, lol

Very nice, lively and vibrant room. I especially love the bike hanging from the ceiling – novel idea indeed!
