Workspace of the Week: Multiple machines

This week’s Workspace of the Week is Antonio’s work-life space:

Having a lot of equipment on your desk isn’t a prescription for disorder, especially in Antonio’s space. This setup includes a MacPro, a MacBook, a MacMini, a Dell Mini 9 (running OS X), two iPhones (one for work, one for personal use), two 23″ Apple Cinema displays, and a Dell UltraSharp. I also spot a cordless phone, an HP printer/scanner/fax machine, a keyboard, a lamp, a cable modem (or maybe it’s a router), and a mouse. But, with all of this equipment, I don’t spot a single piece of clutter. It’s full, but well organized. Thank you, Antonio, for submitting your office for us to see.

Want to have your own workspace featured in Workspace of the Week? Submit a picture to the Unclutterer flickr pool. Check it out because we have a nice little community brewing there. Also, don’t forget that workspaces aren’t just desks. If you’re a cook, it’s a kitchen; if you’re a carpenter, it’s your workbench.

The only problem that I have with this is that apparently the devices are powered by magic :) Seriously, the only cord clutter atop my desk that I haven’t managed to solve is power cords.

I’m also beginning to realize I should have gone for a narrower, longer desk. The Frederik is just too deep to have multiple computers on.

That’s it. I call Shenanigans! I could clean up my miserable wreck of a desk, take a photo of it, and get “Workspace of the Week.” Clean (for the 1/250 of a second that it takes to take a photo) is not the same as Organized. Where is the “place for everything and everything in its place” mantra? The things on the desk aren’t clutter because their top edges happen to be parallel and they’re ordered by size?

    Bah.

Thats true. I wonder where all his stuff goes. Maybe he does have a place for it. I’m in the process of organizing my work space…and I have papers, and paint brushes and pens and pictures and all kinds of other stuff and I can clean my desk off…but I also need spaces for some of those things. Where does his things go?

@Jason and @Sheena — What stuff?? I don’t understand what you think is missing? This person’s entire life is digital. What other things should be on his desk? He doesn’t work with paper, he works with digital data. I’m confused by what you think is missing.

Erin – Then I would ask – Why a printer? Why a fax machine?

I am sure these is a filing system… maybe under the desk?

I love this setup. I’ve been trying to figure out a way to do everything with my printer, macbook, and desktop pc. I use a KVM switch so the same keyboard and monitor are connected to the both computers. But I need to get a wireless keyboard and speakers, and maybe a separate table for the printer so I can unclutter. I love your blog, I always come here to figure out ways to clean up my room, desk, life, etc. :)

Looks great, but there are a couple of things that seem odd to me…with all the cordless technology he has, why on earth does he have a corded keyboard? I am assuming that there is most likely a filing system that isn’t visible in the shot for storage of non-current items. The biggest issue I see is that there’s not enough open desk space to do any actual work without moving several pieces of equipment first, which seems inconvenient to say the least.

    @ Nessa. Exactly. Thanks.

I’m not negating that its a cleaned, nice looking workspace. I just wonder where the other stuff is and how that’s organized. I see that in a lot of the other workspaces that are featured. I refuse to believe his entire work existence is digital. And if it is, give me some lessons then!

I love the table – does anyone know where I might find a similar long and narrow table?

@Nessa and @Sheena — Yes, I imagine that there is a filing cabinet outside the frame of the picture. But usually (except for recently with pages from the book I’m writing) I don’t have any paper in my office except for the filing cabinet, so I was honestly confused by the previous question. Paper comes in, I scan it, shred it or file it, and that’s it. All bills are electronic. Tools are put away after being used. Nothing stacks up on my desk. There isn’t anything to be on the desk other than equipment. My guess is that the same is true for the workspaces we feature. If you’re organized, at the end of the workday, nothing should be on your desk except for equipment and the tools you use every day (pens in a cup, for example).

I really like this set up and would love to have something similar, maybe with a little more desk space for files and documents which are being worked on.

As for the earlier question where someone questioned the corded keyboard. I would hazard a guess that the owner of this set up is on the keyboard a lot and so requires a decent level of reliability which a cordless keyboard may not give when it comes to staying charged long enough.

I’m a little bored by these dust-free workspaces with no cartoons, no pictures of the kids, no awards, no snail mail, no stacks of paper from the client who doesn’t understand e-mail attachments, no disks and thumbdrives of photos from clients who prefer not to use upload file storage for security reasons, and no desk space for proofreading reams of text. Also, to me, it’s not a workspace if the working filing storage is not within reach of the seated person.

    @ Leonie,
I believe the desk is the Galant from Ikea. I love mine!
