Unclutterer on tv with spring decluttering tips
Yesterday morning, I appeared live on WUSA 9, the CBS affiliate in Washington, D.C.
For three minutes, I talked semi-coherently with news anchor Andrea Roane about clearing clutter from your kitchen pantry. Check it out:

Erin – nice job! Good tip about putting the purchase date and the open date on the jars. I’ll have top start doing that.

@Connie –
If it won’t play for you from the website, try the full YouTube link. The video is most definitely still available.

Awesome!! I love it! I am definitely going to that website you recommended! And I love how you put the little packets of stuff in an index file. I have been storing my bags of beans and rice in a desk organizer for years, and everyone always makes fun of me!! But now I feel redeemed

You looked very comfortable, maybe even more comfortable than the woman who was interviewing you.
Regarding herbs and spices, I’ve always read that they should be used within a year, at most. I buy mine in bulk, in small quantities, at the local co-op, where they have a high turnover of product so they’re always fresh. And yes, I also write down the date, though since I use reusable jars I just stick a piece of tape on the bottom of the jar and write the date on that.
I also write down the dates I open a product (or, in the case of leftovers, the dates I made it and stored it in fridge or freezer), though I hadn’t thought of writing down the date of purchase. I don’t think anything sits in my pantry long enough to worry about it! Just want to keep track of what needs using the soonest in the fridge.

O.o … wow Erin is very attractive.

You did an awesome job even with the nervousness. Only suggestion is dress up a bit more. Faded jeans in the full body shot didn’t work while standing next to the professionally reporter. Great tips and love your blog.

@Michele — Did you really just critique the way I was dressed?? Wow.
Just so you know, my wardrobe was actually a decision by the producer of the show. She wanted me to come “ready to work” cleaning up someone’s kitchen pantry. You don’t organize your house in a suit or slacks. You wear a t-shirt and jeans when you clean your house.
Secondly, those “faded” jeans, are a new pair of William Rasts: http://www.williamrast.com/Cat.....Boot%20Cut
My word.

Erin – it was really fun to see you! I loved your relaxed and friendly manner. Even though I like to read organizing books/blogs, I’d never heard the writing down the open date tip, and I also like the bin for the open bags of beans, rice etc.

It’s wonderful to see you in 3D, Erin! Great piece. I hope they have you on again.
I was actually doing this task yesterday.

This past weekend I discovered that one of the best decluttering motivators for the kitchen is to go to Penzeys Spices and come home with two bags full of goodies. My, how easy it was to toss out all the oldie moldies to make room!
That gets pretty expensive if you do it on a regular basis, though.

It is great that Unclutterer.com is so widely read that the main stream media is talking about it. Erin, it was fun to see you talking and doing your thang
Being filmed for TV is nerve-wracking. I said something really stupid to a reporter and had to beg him not to use it on the air. I was nervous and joking around and ended up sort of insulting one our main donors (the interview was about our Red Cross work.) So kudos to you for keeping calm!

WOW! You were great! It is nice to see all of you. You are so naturally beautiful and I LOVE your jeans! Good info too.

Erin,
Great Job !! Loved all the advise. Hope to see these TV spots more often. I’d be a nervous wreck. However, you were cool and got in some good lines !
@Michele,
Manners please, goodness gracious…Erin did say to roll up your sleeves, sounds like jeans/work clothes are appropriate!!

Great job! Plus you’re charming and cute as a button! Love knowing the face behind the words.
Thank you again, and again for unclutterer…
psst, don’t listen to Michele, jeans were very fine… you were great!

Congratulations, Erin on your appearance and on the visibility for Unclutterer. (I have the site on RSS I like it so much) Tho’ live TV can be unnerving, you did an excellent job of appearing Un-nervous =-) Well done!

I couldn’t quite hear the website for cecking to see if stuff s still good. Could you post it? I need to start puting the dates on everything. Thanks for the tips!

In fairness to Michele, I think she meant the comment about the jeans to be helpful. I can see how it was read as critical or rude, but that’s not how I thought it was intended. As in many areas of communication, what’s intended and what’s received don’t always connect.
For me, I didn’t notice what Erin was wearing, just what she was saying, and the fact that she seemed very relaxed and natural–probably because she was in her element, talking about uncluttering.

So that’s what you look like!
I thought it was great. Good, practical, easy to implement, and useful tips. Clothes were fine but I thought the table was just too low, and I couldn’t hear the audio very well. But that’s not a reflection on you, just the tv people. You personally did fine.
Nice to see you in any case! Congratulations on being on tv!

Great job Erin! Looks like you’re tall, like me: 5’9″, size 9 1/2 shoe!!

I think you did a great job Erin, the jeans are a wonderful choice. Too many times these “frugal helpers” look like they stepped out of a corporate office!
I wrote about this with links to three major spices. It was eye opening to look up my spices!

Erin, I just came across your site and loved the segment you did on kitchen organization. It it’s a topic near and dear to me as I got so frustrated not being able to find a good spice storage solution that I have spent the last two years designing one and just debuted it at the International Housewares Show. I especially loved the comment Andrea Roane made about using a lazy-susan and not being able to see what’s in the middle; that drives me crazy! I can store 30 spices on a lazy-susan and see every single label. You can take a look at what has finally brought me spice peace and happiness, wwww.TableFare.com

Great tips. I hadn’t thought of marking items when I open them and the http://www.stilltasty.com site is new to me I will heck it out as soon as I finish this comment.
I did just clean out my refrigerator and got rid of products that were way too old. I also cleaned out my spice rack. I had spices in there that were over a decade old. I’m sure they had no flavor left. Now I’m only buying spices when I need them and only in small amounts.

Just so you know: they edit the comments here. If they don’t like it, they remove it. I’ve seen it at least twice in the last few months.
Love the uncluttering site and tips. The attitude, not so much.

@Tyson — We remove all ad hominem attacks. Comments on this website are to help people learn more about uncluttering and organizing. Making fun of what I’m wearing does not help other people to learn how to organize their kitchen pantries. You are welcome to send me snarky and snide e-mails all you want, but a public forum about home and office organizing is not an appropriate place for your playground jeers. As I’ve stated before, we do not allow clutter into our homes and we do not allow it on the website. Ad hominem attacks are clutter and are not welcome in our comments.
