Very nice! I hadn't thought of the kitchen cabinet as a base. I have lots of questions that I've been toying with and that this redo sparked. I would like to get some 30"-high, wood storage units from Target and put a door panel on top of them to achieve that same long sweeping look.
Questions:
1. This would total 31-7/8" high, but I'm tall, so I think that would be OK if I had the correct chair, right? Most manufactured desks are in the 30" range, though--am I assuming too much?
2. The door panel is 80" long; would a support at each end be enough or would it require a middle cabinet too? I have a flat panel monitor which is lightweight and in this configuration would have the printer on top also. The printer's not light, but it's not super heavy either.
3. The door panels are available in varying widths, from 28 to 36 inches. a. Is there a standard depth for home desks? b. The storage/support units are 15 or 16" deep; would one be enough for a stable base or should I have two? If I had just one, could it be at the front edge of the door panel or would that be asking the back edge to tip over?
Thanks for any insight you can offer. I hate feeling like a dope at the hardware store!

The workspace is cool, but I can see that the computer desktop has pretty much icons, and it's very messy :)

Nice, but this would be a problem for me as tall as I am. There would be a permanent dent in the wood paneling right above the chair for every time I would stand up from the desk and thunk my head on the ceiling.

It's kind of an unfair comparison though, taking the before picture at night and the after picture during the day.

@L -- We pick winners based on what is submitted to our flickr group. There tend to be more modern spaces than any other style. However, we have chosen MANY non-modern spaces. Here are some even just from 2009:

Wow - great improvement! I especially like how the paint job gives the space a much more open look.

My own desk set-up is very much like this one, only I didn't go Ikea. I went Home Depot. :-) I got two pieces of 4-foot MDF, painted them with leftover paint from other projects (and was subsequently able to get rid of some paint clutter from the garage - woot!), mounted them to the wall, and tucked a couple of short file cabinets underneath. I find that having a long desk space works very well for me. I have plenty of space and the cats have plenty of lounging room as they supervise what I'm doing.

It would be nice to see a featured workspace that is not ultramodern in aesthetic, since it is not necessary to be ultramodern in order to be uncluttered.
