PowerShelf charging stations

If making a charging station (like we recommended earlier this morning) isn’t up your alley, then we know of a product that might interest you. One of our Twitter followers tipped us off to The Power Shelf:

I especially like one of their products that is currently in development. It’s a PowerShelf for hair appliances like curling irons, straighteners, and blow dryers.

This leads indirectly to a question that I struggle with. We store a laptop downstairs. currently it sits on a shelf on our bookcase, with the power cord (and extension cord next to it, I would like to find a more attractive and out of sight way to store the laptop and its power cords(its only a 12″ netbook) but haven’t found a way that is both convenient and yet unobtrusive enough that people glancing at the shelf would not know it is a laptop. Ideas from the gallery?

Drill hole in back of bookcase, route cable through that hole. Buy a ‘magazine box’ for the shelf (like this: http://www.dayrunner.com/wcss/.....1_S_1.jpg).

    Presto– hidden laptop.

the product that’s currently in development is one i can really get behind. i usually just leave my iron on the top of my toilet tank, but i have a fear that it’ll drop and set fire to my entire place. *sigh*

Krisha, I’ve been telling my wife to close the toilet lid and set it on there. (Not that she does it. She still balances it on the edge of the sink.) The toilet seat is a lot deeper than the tank.

That last one is interesting. I’ve been looking for a solution other than leaving my hair dryer in the sink or on the floor.

What about storing the dryer/hair curler things in a box under the bathroom sink?

I really like Delete’s suggestion. Actually, I could implement it right now.

Interesting ideas, but I’m a bit concerned about plugging in electrical cords while they’re coiled up.

The first picture especially bothers me – using a laptop with the power cord still wrapped about the power brick is a serious fire hazard.

@Joe W: not necessarily. My dell specifically says that it’s fine to do this, as long as… trying to remember exactly… the wires are going in opposite directions. So the one between the charger and the wall is wrapped around clockwise, and the one between the charger and the laptop is wrapped anti-clockwise.

I think it’s okay because they draw very little charge, unlike a heater where you definitely shouldn’t do this. Just touch it while it’s on, and if it’s getting warm you probably shouldn’t do it; if it’s cool, you’re fine.

I set up a small vintage dressing table next to my bed with a mirror and power strip for all of my small appliances attached to the back of the table. When I’m done, I flip off the power strip so no power is wasted. Then I hang my blow dryer and flat iron on hooks drilled into the side of the table out of sight. No more water vs electricity! And n more clutter.

The hook for the extension cord looks EXACTLY like the hooks for garden hoses >_> The one for the hair dryer and curling iron isn’t quite a new invention, either – stylists have the same holder (more or less); the only difference is I haven’t seen a stylist’s where the holder rests on the electrical outlet like that one does. I would be kind of concerned about the appliances being so close to the floor (for those who don’t have wall-mounted outlets).

And the laptop shelf, while a neat idea, just looks kind of ugly. =\ I’d rather take the time to hide the cords behind the desk than set it up on that.

these are cool, but i feel like i could figure out something similar for less than the 50 bucks they charge. a staples wall file folder holder would do almost the same thing for much cheaper.

i like good design that unclutters, but i’m not sure this is worth the dough. although it does give me an idea – i might go pick up a file folder holder or magazine rack today.

If your electrical cords are getting warm then you need to throw out the item. coiling a cord that is safe to begin with, I.E. it never get’s warmer than room temperature, will not cause any problems the “dell” not is to eliminate coupling of AC current into the DC power cable on the other end.

That said, if you leave your laptop plugged in all the time, remove the battery. The battery will last far longer if it is not constantly being charged. I managed the It department of 400 laptops. all laptops that were plugged in all the time with the battery installed had to have new batteries in a year. All that did not have the battery installed when they were always plugged in and were charged up every 2 weeks, the batteries lasted nearly 3 years.

My hairdryer has a rubber loop to hang it off of & I just had my husband screw a hook into the side of our cabinet near the plug. In our old house, the hook was in the wall above the plug but I like it this way better because you can’t see the dryer all the time. If your hairdryer doesn’t have a built-in hook, a ribbon tied around it would probably work & look better than the charging station above.

These are awesome! The laptop caddy would be great for avoiding the laptop cord stretched across the room. I also love the one for the bathroom. I hate having the hair dryer and flat iron on the counter, it is just too much clutter! ~amy
