I understand the points about making your own but unfortunately my nephews don't have parents that would make something like this for them and i live far away. i like to buy them things that make them think or that might be interesting for them in one way or another.

yes, i could make one out of pvc pipe but would a 7 year old you find that a fun present to open?

i agree about this thing not being waterproof though. serious design fail right there.

My family just did a time capsule, that positively will not be dug up or added to - Well, you should just go see it.

<a href="http://ttelroc.blogspot.com/2009/02/seal-it-up.html" rel="nofollow">Our Time Capsule</a>

We worked on it for a solid week, sending pictures to one another, talking about our memories and writing our letters. It was a lot of fun and I hope that someday our treasure is found.

The underground TC is a hoot and totally not worth it.

I'll buy this for my children so they can practice hiding their cash where the Feds can't find it, a la Tony Soprano.

We have a time capsule...made in First Grade by my now Sophomore in high school daughter. True, it is made of a Pringles (tm) can covered in foil and it's placed on a shelf in the bookcase. We are to open it the day she graduates from high school.
We have all resisted the temptation to open it!!
I have no idea of what's inside and the funny thing is, my sophomore can't remember either. must be paper of some sort, not to noisy when we shake it.
Yes, I have to dust around it, but what a hoot it will be to open it when the time comes
AND i know the contents will be DRY!! I don't need a "gooey blob" resurrected from my yard, which with snow melting right now, looks more like a bog.

The first time I ran over that "rock" with my super Craftsman riding mower it would be history. No pun intended. :D

Better time capsule than that one.

PCV pipe with PVC caps and glue. fill it, glue the ends on and bury it. it is watertight and airtight so you don't have a gooey blob in 10,20,50,100,500 years when you open it.

the "toy" mentioned is not waterproof or sealed so it's contents will be destroyed the first rain.

I like how the description on Amazon says "store money." Like I'm going to bury my money instead of using it!

Andy Dufresne: At the base of that wall, you'll find a rock that has no earthly business in a Maine hayfield. Piece of black, volcanic glass. There's something buried under it I want you to have.

Red: What, Andy? What's buried under there?

Andy Dufresne: It's an ugly green time capsule. I paid way too much for it. Next time I'll just use an old cigar box.

I find it funny that they've designed a time capsule that you can continually add stuff to. I thought the point of a time capsule was to store stuff as a snapshot of a particular point in time.

I agree that anything you'd likely put in there is clutter so what you're really doing is disposing of your clutter by foisting it off on future generations. We're already doing that with our finances. Why add to it? ;)

I guess the creator of this time capsule realizes that people will buy just about anything! Your point is totally valid though - if you are going to try a capsule, it would be more fun to make the container yourself using an item around the house. Shame I live in a condo and don't have a lawn where I could bury some of my clutter!
