yea, nice recycling program. bestbuy sells of the items to salvages. so.... not only do you have to pay but then they get paid when the re-sell to whole sale salvages. the only thing worse is their cell phone recycling program. where they give you nothing for a phone that can net a profit on ebay or craigslist. they say the money earned goes to support the United Way but if you read the fine print on the recycle envelope it says that 1% actually goes to that cause. they just resell it make a profit. and yes there is still much value in broken, old and used cellphones.... and best buy knows it.

Useful post, Matt. According to Eric's link, Best Buy accepts batteries. I have several non-rechargeable AAA's to turn in, maybe at BB. Does anyone know if these batteries are recycled or just crushed by BB? (Thanks for the info, timgray). I tried to find a place online that would accept the batteries, but in most cases I have to pay way above shipping and handling. I don't want to just discard them, because of the damage the chemicals would do in the landfill. As a grad student, I can't afford to pay $48 (the price cited by the most "green"-appearing site I found) to recycle batteries. Any info would be much appreciated!

[...] The caveats: Best Buy isn’t accepting hard drives (privacy concerns?), TVs or monitors bigger than 32 inches, anything containing Freon, or anything classified as an “appliance,” like a refrigerator, microwave, or the like. And each TV, monitor, and laptop costs a $10 fee to recycle, but Best Buy gives you a $10 gift card in return. They’re also only taking two items per household, per day, so don’t plan on making a last-day-before-moving trip to the big blue and gold. [via [...]

But why wouldn't you just sell your broken electronics on ebay and MAKE money instead of spending money to get rid of it? I just recently sold a broken Canon powershot camera for $48. I think people are buying them for parts to resell, or to fix them up and sell as refurbished.

Is Best Buy doing "green" recycling, or just shipping the stuff for scavenging in China?

@timgray -- Just a head's up, not all Salvation Armies and Goodwills will take electronics (most won't). Before taking electronics to any charity, call first.

If it's DEAD give it to best buy. if it works donate it to Salvation army or another group that can sell it to help the poor and homeless. Best buy will crush everything and send it to approved landfills and metal reclamation centers (It really does not get "recycled" completely. you get no tax write off.

Donated working stuff you get to write it off. plus you are helping recycling more than having it crushed will.

Good to know. I've been looking to recycle a broken printer, and was shocked to discover Staples charges $20 for the privilege. What a great way to encourage participation.

I brought my hard drive to Computation to be drilled. Anything above 10GB is wiped and reused, anything below is drilled and taken care of. They have locations in Toronto and Montreal, I believe.
