I think Twitter is so not clutter. It's a way to force yourself to be focused with your words. With only 140 characters, you have to be concise! And, if you feel you're getting spammed, simply "unfollow" someone to stop receiving their updates and/or block them from following you.

Following now, thanks! :-)

I don't know how to control the spam, but when I delete them, I am sure to block them, too. For awhile there, my bio said 'no soliticing'. It seems to have dropped off lately, though!

Sounds like it might be worth joining. I have not joined for several reasons already mentioned by others. I wrote a post about why I won't join facebook and the same goes for twitter. Now that I see others recommend it for productivity and brevity, I thinking about it.

Anyone know how to control the twitter spam mentioned above?

I've been using twitter for about a year now, but I'm becoming a little less enchanted. I was getting about 5 spam-ish followers a day, mostly businesses trying to figure out a way to exploit/share on twitter. I changed my profile to not-public. Twitter is getting cluttered! :)

I resisted getting on Twitter for a while. I didn't want another thing to maintain. But I think Twitter is a minimalist social networking site that functions as a news feed for my personal relationships, interests, and the world at large.

The micro-blogging aspect forces brevity which is fantastic! :) I like the format and can't think of a reason I'd go on myspace, facebook, etc. because of Twitter. :)

Best,
Shalin

@Melissa -- I think Twitter can be clutter, but it certainly doesn't have to be. It's the same as any other social media site in that if you don't set limits on your activity you can quickly waste a great deal of time using it. However, if you are smart about how you use the service, it can end up being an incredibly valuable resource.

Since I work from home, it helps to create a much needed office environment for me. Most of my "friends" are business associates who send messages about software and services that improve their work. They discuss relevant industry insights and tip me off to news that affects how I work. So, for me, it's not clutter. If you (and I don't mean you specifically, but in a general sense) have issue with becoming addicted to social networking sites, then I don't recommend it until you learn to control the frivolous behavior.

Very cool! Although I don't think I've quite gotten bitten by the Twitter bug yet. :) I hear it's addicting!
