Workspace of the Week: A garage transformation

This week’s Workspace of the Week is Gently Organized’s new office, which used to be her garage:

Reader Gently Organized recently remodeled her garage and turned it into a spacious home office. What used to be the overhead door to her single-car garage is now a glass door that looks out onto her garden. The desks and overhead cabinets appear to be Ikea pieces and the file cabinets and storage units below the desk look like Elfa products. Looking at another image of the room you can see a fantastic magazine rack, storage boxes behind the frosted glass, and room for her to work with clients:

Thank you, Gently Organized, for submitting your inspiring space to our flickr group.

Want to have your own workspace featured in Workspace of the Week? Submit a picture to the Unclutterer flickr pool. Check it out because we have a nice little community brewing there. Also, don’t forget that workspaces aren’t just desks. If you’re a cook, it’s a kitchen; if you’re a carpenter, it’s your workbench.

The glass door link does not work. Whenever I click the link, it says I do not have permission to view this photo.

Very nice design. I’ve been thinking about converting my garage into an office as well but wasn’t sure how the glass door front would look. I really like this design though.

I see they have the Ikea Galant desk system. It is sturdy, beautiful and has super-flexible configuration options. My husband and I have the same system and really like it.

I can’t get any of the links to work either, unfortunately.

@Sooz and @AJ — I think that Flickr was having some problems this morning, I can see all of the links now.

So nice. Makes me hate my house even more! It’s a mess! But the more I keep reading your site, the more inspiration and motivation I get. Thank you!

Alas, have just checked and still apparently don’t have permission to view the photos. I did want to see that glass door too :-(

I’m getting a permissions error as well when trying to view the images on flickr.

I’ve had different people test the images all across the U.S., and none of them are having difficulty seeing the images. My only thought is that you are not a member of the Unclutterer Flickr group and “Gently Organized” may have her permissions set so that only members can see the images. If that is the case, just join the Flickr group and you shouldn’t have any further issues. You don’t have to add images to join.

But, if you’re dead set on not joining the group, you also can see the image here:

This is really nice! Feels really comfortable and appears to get a lot of natural sunlight too. That’s awesome! :)

Next “Workspace of the Week”: Nick Randall‘s garage/office/loft combination.

Those client chairs look very uncomfortable!
What’s up with that? Still shopping?

Very nice garage conversion. Can I assume that this is in an area of the country where snow does not affect the need for a garage?
I’m in the greater Chicago area and I can’t imagine life without a garage when we have snow!!

The light is the greatest thing about this space for me. How wonderful to have so much of it.

Really nice set up and great use of a garage. Makes me want to sort out my mess of an office even more.

Thanks. I am indeed dead set on not joining sites I don’t use regularly–computer clutter. When I go back to something like Staples where I order once a year or so, I have to search through my mail archive to find my user name.

Thanks for all the great comments. The french doors are by Anderson and were ordered to fit into the overhead door space. They provide great light as well as fresh air (the door has a sliding screen).

After living in Iowa (where we had a much needed 2-car garage), we moved to Alexandria, VA and found the weather so moderate we could live without the garage. We added a window (not shown in the photos) for even more natural light. We also installed a heating/air conditioning unit like the ones found in hotel rooms.

The “client chairs” are mostly used by my grandchildren because I go to clients homes (I’m an organizer!) rather than meeting them in my office. If you live in the Washington, DC metro area, I’d love to help you get your home office organized.

I’m delighted you featured the space of fellow organizer, Judy Parkins. I have to say, one of my favorite things about her garage/office space (I’ve spent hours there) is the doors that over look her drive way and back yard garden. It’s a very peaceful serene space where she can watch her grandchildren play and her two Maltese prance about in the grass. I think the photos really needed a photo of one of the dogs, “Buttons” on the big overstuffed chair.

By using the Ikea over head storage, most of her supplies and information are behind the frosted glass and cabinet doors and the elfa® file cart is great for the visual types. I think the only thing missing is a Mac!

If you need help getting organized, Judy is fantastic with paper and she teaches group classes in the Del Ray area of Alexandria, VA. I highly recommend, Judy.

Unfortunately, even after establishing a flickr account, the link states that the photo is private. Do you have any other recommendations for viewing this picture?

There’s a problem with the chairs’ position.
You should have your back to the wall and the face to the entrance. If you have to think about what might be happening behind your back, your productivity will suffer.

Love this office-wish the linked photos were visible though.
