Alternatively, use the basket that you have to trake the kat to vets / on holiday etc and put the litter tray inside it. We have taken the door off ours.

Now the thing you use twice a year is in use all the year round.

(Careful shopping in the first place is needed otherwise the tray will not fit in the basket.)

Feline urine smells horribly — and if you don’t do something to protect the wood, it will permeate it. Then, the cat stuff is right next to the box and s/he could urinate on that stuff as well… Ewww.

(*I’ve had male cats and cannot imagine this working. It also doesn’t look tall enough to accommodate the height of some of the cats I have had.)

I love the idea of hiding the litter box and I think that cats appreciate a little privacy once and while. When we bought our house we were wondering what to do with the built-in bar (we didn’t have any interest in using it as a bar). We decided to convert it into our cat’s little ‘apartment’. No one knows it’s back there, the cat has privacy, we can organize all his stuff on the shelves under the bar, and we can also still use the large counter top for other things. This solution won’t work for everyone, but in this case, we were delighted to be able to creatively put to use something that we wouldn’t have used otherwise.

I like the idea of the hidden litter box, but I’d have to modify it significantly to work for my bunny – she’d eat the wood! I keep thinking about getting one of those boxes with the lid and the door to keep the litter from getting out, but I’m not sure she’s smart enough to find her way in.

We live in a 2.5 bath house, and allocated the 0.5 as a “cat room”. I added a cat door near the bottom, and a low-power ceiling fan runs pretty much 24-7. So, not only the food, litter, and supplies, but also the smell and spills, are completely contained.

If you don’t care about looks, a large rubbermaid with a hole cut out of one side makes a great litterbox holder.

I dunno…. Hack a $100 item for a cat? Not inclined to do that. Don’t get me wrong, I like cats. Had two when I lived where they were allowed. But, I’m sure a less expensive piece of furniture could be found; the instructions don’t say you must use the Norrebo bench, just something that will accommodate a litter box. (Hmmm, wonder if the neighbor’s piano would do….)

infmom – I’m betting that depends on the cat and situation. Ours loves his privacy, mostly because our dog will annoy him if he doesn’t have his own enclosed space.

According to the book “Cat vs. Cat” the average cat hates to do his/her business in a place where he/she can’t see who or what might be approaching.

We adopted a new cat at the first of the year. Our one remaining cat had never lived with another feline who wasn’t part of his own family (his mother and sister had died). All of sudden he was leaving little surprise packages for us on the kitchen floor. Once we moved the cat box out of its back corner in the laundry room, to a position where the cats could see through the door into the kitchen, the box got a lot more consistent use.
