Workspace of the Week: A standup job

This week’s Workspace of the Week is Camflan’s standup desk:

I wish that the picture were a little better quality, because I fear that it doesn’t do this setup justice. For starters, the desk was built by Camflan and his grandfather and the work surface is 44″ high. The thing is, though, that its user is 6′7″ tall and so the top monitor is right at his line of vision. The desk also can easily be used by someone much shorter who can look at the lower laptop monitor. The top of the desk is glass and its user writes on it with dry-erase markers. The setup is simple and perfect for its user. It’s an impressive homemade solution.

Also, don’t forget that workspaces aren’t just desks. If you’re a cook, it’s a kitchen; if you’re a carpenter, it’s your workbench.

Funny, I’m standing at the kitchen counter with my laptop while looking at this. I’m only 5′1″, so 36″ is standing height for me.
I find that standing up helps limit how much time I spend at the computer. It’s probably also better for my back (if not my arches.)
Here’s some info about treadmill desks from the NY Times http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09.....ref=slogin
Now your treadmill isn’t a unitasker anymore!

What keyboard is that?! I’ve been looking for a wireless keyboard that small. All the small keyboards i find add in a bunch of multimedia buttons at the top, which kind of defeats the purpose of making it small to begin with.

My husband, who’s 6′8″, will get a kick out of this. We had the hardest time finding him something big enough but not overpowering. We finally went with a large corner desk that wraps around the wall on either side from IKEA.

    Ryan,

It is one of the new aluminum Apple Wireless Keyboards. I _love_ it, I moved to it from one of the wired ones, and before that a logitech G15. It’s by far my favorite and I really feel like I write/code faster with it.

    Tabitha,

I know how it goes :) I looked and looked for a reasonably priced standup desk tall enough, and I dreamt of some of the motorized sit/stand desks. But man they are expensive!

Hope he enjoys his IKEA desk, if only we had one of those here in the central midwest.

Ryan, that is an Apple wireless keyboard:

I think the only way a shorter user could use a 44″ height desk surface would be to sit on a bar-height stool. Perhaps on a couple of phonebooks, too!

30″ is standard table/desk height (seated work surface), 36″ is standard for a standing work surface height and 42″ for bar height — which is not meant to be used as a working surface at all. So this super tall desk may be just right for this very tall user but I suspect would not be functional for anyone much shorter. I think it would hit me just under the chin, actually!

I hope that I someday have the opportunity to do something as nice for you all as you have done for me today. I can get a hospital table and get rid of the unitasker once and for all. Reading all of these great blogs does cut into exercise time!

sorry to be a bummer but I think it’s an ugly space.
