It seems a little strange so many of us who work in software or product development, or creative fields such as artists, writers etc., who want to be paid for our own work are so often concerned about paying someone else for *their* work.

Actually, I am surprised that folks seem to focus on whether something is free or not. As Erin points out, you really need to make an apples-to-apples comparison with money being one of the factors.

In my case, I have recently stepped up to a $56/mo plan on Backpack, because I am using to to collaborate with 10 or so other people, and I want to use the Newsroom and Journal features on a daily basis.

Of course, if I find I am not getting value, I can step down my account to a lower level at any time.

And others can simply share specific pages with other users without paying for full-up Backpack accounts for them. So the service provides a simple way to scale up your use to what you need.

Just cancelled my basic account — they will no longer be supporting IE6. I can’t get Firefox Portable to run on my computer at work (it used to work, but IT must have changed something to keep us non-administrator-rights folks from choosing our own browser), so I’m stuck with IE6.

Backpack is great, but it’s just too expensive. If you want to use it with several people you’re facing a $288 yearly cost. That’s a bit steep.

Agree completely – Backpack is hard to categorize, but an absolutely invaluable organizational tool. Whenever I consider alternative note taking / information manager tools I always go back to using Backpack within a few days.

My only issue has been with offline access, so thanks very much for highlighting Packrat – looking forward to trying it out tonight!
