Oh- and when we got our cats, I got a kitty potty training kit from citikitty. It took a while, and we ended up putting tub safety decals on our toilet seat to give them better traction, but WOW!
No litter, no smell, and nothing to clean.

My sisters and I chipped in and bought Mom a bulk photo scan box from scanmyphotos.com. It was $124 for a box that will hold 1600 photos, and after she packs all her unlabeled snaps from all forty years of her marriage, they'll scan them onto cd's. We're going to post them to the internet and all pitch in to identify/label/sort the photos as we have time.
The extra benefit here is that when our parents pass on, there won't be any tussle over who gets the family albums because we can all order our own from snapfish.com.
Mom's also really relieved, she's felt overwhelmed by the mass of photos for years.

@Erin - I believe you that it's worth the price. If I didn't have toddlers who were already obsessed with cat litter, I might consider it. I was just teasing about the bank account. :)

@Shmaf -- For what it's worth, Peter Walsh's tips on her site are pretty good. As the saying goes ... even a broken clock is still right twice a day :)

I find it hypocritical that Oprah is the Queen of buying and owning (see her magazines and showed filled with her favorite things) and then pushes tips to unclutter.

My tip is to stop the subscription to her magazine and stop watching her show. You will be less likely to want to buy things you don't need and have less magazine clutter.

unclutterer - I expect this was a temporary lapse in your better judgement.

I've had a litter robot for 3 years now. Yes, it was ridiculously expensive. Yes, people think I'm insane when they see the giant spaceship robot thing in the bathroom. And yes, it was absolutely worth every single cent.

My cat adjusted just fine, is protected all around and can see out the front so she's not threatened. And I went from being a bad cat mom who didn't scoop often enough to knowing kitty always has clean litter. I don't need to ask anyone to scoop if I leave town for a couple of weeks, just feed and love her up. I my litter robot!

@Jay — That's a great idea! It takes a little time to register the change you deposit, so I'd advise against using coins to re-up your card during rush hour.

Conquering coin clutter:

Metro (our subway system) riders in the Washington, DC, area can use their spare coins to add value to their Metro card. It is cheap (there is no fee) and convenient (every rider must walk by a Metro card machine).

Re: Clutter free Mother's Day gift---for MIL, a gift catalog of food for her to select one gourmet item from. My mom has a joint supplement that helps her knee mobility, so I sent her a six month supply.

@Sarah -- I know it's expensive, but if you have a cat, it is completely worth the price. Seriously. Read the reviews of the product. I have one for my two cats and cannot say enough good things about it. In fact, the amount of money you save on cat litter pays for the device in less than a year.

I recently posted on One Bag Nation about the Transition Box I have for my daughter. I smuggle "treasures" into it regularly, and if she doesn't ask for them within a week or two, out they go!

Just for the record: she's never asked for anything yet!

Establishing a box for me is a very good idea.
