   We had one of those storage lockers once. One day we went over to get something, and they had set out the contents of a locker somebody stopped paying for. It was amazing how much trash they had in there, namely broken and worn-out looking things. It makes you wonder if people ever consider how much money they are spending on the storage of something that CLEARLY they can live without.

   In the Frugal Zealot books, Amy D. talks about how if you have less junk, you don’t need as big of a house to HOUSE it, and if you are buying a big place just because you have a lot of stuff, then your stuff isn’t really paid for because it is costing you to keep it. Enlightening, actually!

   oooo- I absolutely refuse to store anything unless it is seasonal decorations, clothes that my oldest has outgrown that I’m saving for her sister (only 2 years younger so I don’t have to store them long), and a handful of keepsakes for each of my kids. Everything else can be donated, sold, or freecycled.

   We only have one (admittedly large) closet, so we’re somewhat limited anyway, but we store: out-of-season clothes and linens (extra blanket, featherbed), X-mas stuff (2 boxes), our moving dolly, a window fan, and luggage. And probably some other stuff my BF isn’t telling me about.

   I think the same thing when I see yet ANOTHER storage facility popping up in my area. How did people live before they had these? Maybe they just had less stuff.

   funny because my hubby just looked into renting a storage container – gasp – for our yard to move all of our “junk” into while we renovated. It was going to cost upwards of 400 dollars to store stuff for three months – as opposed to tossing it which is FREE – lol. Putting a dollar value on storing all of the stuff thats taking up space really was a wake up call to just get rid of it . . .which I am amping up to do soon! The only things that are remaining are my pared down holiday supplies and furniture that we will use once the space is done.

   That said though – I do have a china hutch that I proudly display my fine china and even though its taking up space its a space I gladly contribute to something that brings me happiness.. . I guess it could be categorized as a displayed collection rather than storage?

   I only “store” things that are in use part of the year, such as seasonal decorations and gardening tools. But I do try to keep that space as organized as possible. I’m always throwing away “junk” my husband has collected when he’s not looking, though. He hasn’t missed any of it yet!

   I live in a hurricane zone and I rented a small storage locker for awhile to keep family pictures and other things that I would hate to lose when I took a job up north just in case. Many snow birds down for the winter rent them for the off-season to avoid transporting things back and forth. I cleared mine out when I returned but I agree. If you really need a storage locker, you have too much stuff.
