Not sure if you've seen this little gem, but it could go a long way to helping to unclutter your desktop.

Andy, that is the theoretical speed of usb. In practice, firewire 400 is significantly faster then usb2.0.

only 4 usb ports? :[

then again it would be STUPIDLY easy to build something like this buy hand... and put a much bigger port in there...

Thanks for the idea!

it's pretty, but i could build the same basic thing for way less than $80.
what i really need is a docking station, so i don't have unplug a million wires to actually use the "portable" option on my laptop :P

USB 2.0 is 480mbps. That's faster than Firewire 400, and faster than most drives are able to read data.

That looks good, but it's only USB, and not Firewire. Ideally it would include a few Firewire 400 and 800 ports as well—I only use FW external drives since USB is soooo slooowww.

I like it even though I could probably figure out a cheaper way to do the same thing. My problem with this device is that so far all my peripherals have had problems when plugged into a USB hub. Alas, I am stuck with leaving the connectors on the desk b/c I have to swap all the time.

Agreed.

I know this isn't nearly as chic as spending 80 bucks on cable management, but my wacom and other cabled peripherals at work are managed by this simple little thing called a rubber band.

That picture is could be taken as misleading. The laptop is closed in the first picture, so for all we know all the wires could be hidden behind the screen in the second photo. It's an interesting concept, but I don't think it's worth 80 bucks, and it's a little bulky for what it does. Just my opinion though.
