Unclutterer

   Hi – I have a bit of a request for an article/link about organization. Has anyone read anything (or know anything) about organization of dorm rooms? I’m a college student, and constantly have to battle to keep my many books, clothes, and assorted items arranged in a very tiny space. This is all while maintaining what my friend calls a “collapsible lifestyle” – when all your worldly possessions have to be consolidated into a car and moved home and back each year.

   I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations or tips for space saving, or ideas for items that had multiple uses in a dorm room, small kitchen, shared bathroom, or common room.

   Amanda – something that worked great for me but may be a bigger pain than it’s work for others was converting my bed in college into a lofted one. Bed goes up high like a bunk bed, desk goes underneath. Saved me a TON of space.

   It did make…er…other aspects of college…lifestyle…more awkward, however (but it was a great conversation starter).

   the container store – and many other places – have an over idealized idea of what college dorms are really like. we weren’t allowed to raise our beds to lofted levels, but MANY people used bed raisers to get an extra 6 inches or so of under-the-bed storage space. at college, generally less is more.

   the most useful things I had for all four years of college were 6 $2 plastic stacking crates that could be stacked to form book shelves, or used as laundry baskets, storage boxes and whatever else I needed. I also had a collapsable laundry basket which was great for packing bedding/pillows at the end of each quarter. A sturdy shower caddy is also useful, and I had an accordion file folder to keep track of files/receipts/important paperwork. I also washed (and dried) all my socks/underwear/delicates in large lingerie/laundry bags so I didn’t loose any to the dryer monster (they were also great for packing up socks to move out), and I had forest green clothes hangers (everyone else had white) so mine were quite distinct from everyone else’s.

   i ran across a meatball maker last week at a thrift shop and immediately thought ‘UNITASKER!’ well, first i laughed, then i thought of it as a unitasker. i’d never seen it on tv (as apparently that’s where it’s been hyped) and thought it might actually be a joke, so i picked up the box to see how it worked. i thought it was so funny i almost bought it, but then i remembered that i’m trying to unclutter my life.

    Unitasker I came across the other day: a small green flexible plastic cuplike thing about the size of your palm. Apparently, according to my grandmother, all the fancy chefs use it to put their herbs in to help them distribute them evenly over a dish. I had no idea! I’m totally missing out! Cause you can’t simply, you know, shake them out of the jar or in the case of fresh, use your hands.

    I can’t find a link or any pictures online but I promise it was funny.
