That looks really uncomfortable for sitting (and writing). Plus, who can fit a couch/bed/desk in the middle of the a guest room? Guest rooms tend to be on the smallish side. Multi-functional should be aesthetically and ergonomically pleasing. Otherwise, what's the point?

i've seen a similar piece of furniture in photos of a john pawson designed house. a wooden framed couch with an overhanging table-like surface for a desk at the back. john pawson seems like an unclutter's dream architect...

Good idea, but why so UGLY? It would be nice to have furniture that multi-functions but doesn't look like a brick.

I notice a few things about this.

1. The desk part is the back of the piece, so that's easy to use; you always have this overhang on the back of your couch. That does severely cut down on the transformation time I was imagining.
2. I don't think that narrow ledge really qualifies to be called a desk. Although there is space for file cabinets under the ledge, that's a plus.
3. The bed is what 7 inches off the ground? If you want to sleep on the floor, buy an air mattress. (it can be stored under the back of the couch)
4. I like the natural wood; it just begs for personalization. I imagine different stains & colors making a very unique look.
5. The tyvek idea is great. I've used tyvek for mailing; that stuff is tough! I think it would stand up to anything except intentional damage.

All things considered; I think this is great if you have very limited space & want your furniture to multi task. I could imagine it in a small apartment or dorm room. Sturdy & practical.

Reserve judgment until you sit on it. It looks like one of those things that is only great in concept, but is so darn uncomfortable, that no one will actually want to sit on it and after one night will be begging off to a hotel.

That is a really neat idea, and perfect for a guest room that needs to be an office. I'm not crazy about the style of it, but the idea is super awesome!

I love it... Very MUJI. It would be perfect for my office / guest room, if only I hadn't just bought a desk and a bed!

This is really cool and I think its way more functional than this excuse of a 'bed' or 'table and chairs' - http://unclutterer.com/2007/11/27/2-1-multi-functioning-furniture/

The concept is fantastic. Now roll it in bamboo or something dark and smooth and we've got a piece. It's far too "The End Up" in that finish.
