Get organized month

The National Association of Professional Organizers has declared January Get Organized Month!

We love the idea of starting off the year on the right foot, and we want to get in on the fun. In the comments to this post, tell us about your plans to get organized in 2008!

I’m putting some of the advice I’ve gained from this blog into action. I’m working on a room a day for about 1/2 hour (today is kids’ rooms). My hope is to develop better overall habits so that some of that time can be spent decluttering those areas. I’m off to a good start and have reorganized my bathroom, gotten rid of some unnecessary things in the kitchen and have established laundry days.

I happened upon this blog yesterday while looking for charging stations. I am HOOKED!

Yesterday, I ordered new storage boxes to re-do my home office storage (I work out of my home). Then, I am going to utilize the clear shoe boxes I was using for that storage to clean out under the abyss that is the bathroom vanity cabinet.

I realized that I am so much happier when things are neat and organized. The little bit of a time – 1/2 hour a day principle is so true – keep things in check before they get out of hand.

Happy 2008 everyone! I look forward to all of your suggestions!

This blog has been such an inspiration to me! I have many plans for de-cluttering this year. Right now, my husband and I are going through all our kitchen cupboards, clearing out things we don’t need, and reorganizing what we are keeping.

Yesterday, we took 6 big bags of clothes, books, and miscellaneous items to Salvation Army. I just hope we can keep up the momentum and eventually get to my bedroom closet.

I received Peter Walsh’s book “It’s All Too Much” for Christmas (I requested it). What he says has opened my eyes about why I hold onto things. I’m energized and creating my Master Plan for decluttering the house. Today I dug into it a bit. The things I did might not seem like they made a dent, but they did, and I’m on a roll. My entire house will be decluttered and organized this year. For good. 2008 is the Year of Living Simpler for me.

I’m going to sew up the boxes and boxes of quilt pieces that I’ve cut. They’re organized, they’re neat, but they’re TOO MUCH.

Half-an-hour a day? Scheduled in my Above and Beyond software (which I love dearly)?

I’m of two minds. Other things should perhaps come first, like finding a job :/

My wife and I started last weekend the Declutterification of the House. Our closet: 9 bags of clothes to Goodwill. The library (so far): 78 books donated to church, 6 returned to family members, 200+ in a stack to be sold or given away. We’re about 2/3 through the shelves. Next up: The basement.

Okay 2008 is my year of organization…I’ve given up on getting in shape so I guess I’ll focus my efforts on the house and call it my cardio workout. My aim this year is to start living as if we are moving…just in case we do and would have to show the house (one of my fears) I’m waiting until my two kids are at school tomorrow before I go through their rooms to organize/donate/rearrange the upstairs…but I dread the return to school because they bring home 30 pages of stuff each day and for some reason I feel compelled to hang on to a lot of it!!! Why do I feel nostalgic over their coloring pages, trinkets, baby shoes????

Jen, I have a solution for the kid stuff. Make a museum wall in your house and post a few of the best pictures that your kids bring home. When new stuff comes in, old stuff has to go away. Really good stuff can be framed.

I am going to tackle the non-public spaces in our house, the linen closet, the guest bedroom closet and the office. It has become to easy to dump stuff in those spaces with the thought of “I will take care of that later.” Well, “later” is going to be “now.”

I am also going to send off the stack of paperback books that I have been setting aside for Operation Paperback, an organization that helps get books into the hands of men and women serving overseas in the military. By the way, I found out about this organization through Unclutterer, thank you.

My new husband and I just moved into a new house. Unfortunately for our backs, we didn’t have any time for paring down before we moved everything, so we have two households worth of stuff to deal with. We originally thought that the new house not having a basement might be a big problem, but we’re finding it to be a blessing in disguise: there’s nowhere to shove useless stuff!

We piled everything in one spot and have been slowly sorting through it and putting things away. One of my goals in the new year is to deal with a box a day until it’s all done. I’ve filled four boxes to take to paper recycling so far this week.

Well, it would be nice if I could see the floor. I guess I’ll start there.

This is the year for organizing my office and scrapbooking room. I just picked up some new filing trays from Pottery Barn that I love! This will help me with the stacks of paper that are all over my office. Next, I will take the hundred post-it notes that I have usernames and passwords written on and organize them into my new “Internet Password Organizer”. I am really excited about this because I can never find my passwords when I need them. Lastly, I am going to sort out all of my scrapbooking supplies into these cool cabinets that I ordered from the “Home Decorators” catalog. They have lots of small drawers so that you can sort lots of little things. Once I finish sorting them, I hope to label all the drawers so that I can find my stuff when I have time to sit and scrapbook (which I really, really hope to make time for this year!)

I am a soon-to-be college graduate. Starting off the year with giving away clothes and recycling old paperwork. My ultimate goal is to have 2 (large) suitcases of stuff (not including my bed and desk) by mid-year. One suitcase to leave at my parents’ house, and one to take traveling for 2-3 months. Yay minimalism!

I’m putting my music charts into electronic form so I can e-mail them to the members of my band rather than tearing through shelves and paper piles to find that one very specific piece of paper!

Besides continuing on our constant quest to declutter the junk in our lives (TURNS OUT, we had a lot of junk), we’re tackling closets.

We’re currently looking at ways to make our closets work for us to keep things (that we really use and need) out of sight.
