Most recently, we painted the interior part of our kitchen cabinets with black chalboard paint and it became a message board. Works like a charm. And they make low dust chalk. Works really well. Sorry, but I loathe chalk. I have to deal with it everyday, as none of the schools at which I teach have upgraded to whiteboards. And I know whiteboards suck, with pens drying out, and the wrong kind of pen indelibly marking the board, and so on... but God, the DUST! And the FEEL of the stuff scraping itself off onto the board... and it gets into your clothes, and into your skin, and into your soul... Agh! Sorry, but I loathe chalk. Thanks for posting our chalkboard! What I did was paint a the rectangle directly on the wall with that chalkboard paint ($11 at Home Depot) Then took some prepainted baseboard ($20 Lowes)cut to fit, nailed it up, took another piece of trim nailed it to the bottom trim for the chalk holder, all in all it was about a 3-4 hour job, minus the paint drying...our son loves it and I am currently using it to display my financial goals for my new business.
