The wireless speaker lamp
Over at Wired’s Gadget Reviews, they take a look and listen at a cool concept from Soundolier. The concept is rather interesting. It’s a lamp that doubles as a wireless speaker. Unfortunately, although cool in concept, the reviewed product seems to be lacking in what it delivers. From Wired:
Going wireless means shelling out an extra $80 for the Maestro wireless transmitter. Tinny audio makes the Duo fit only for rear positions in surround setups. Lamp lacks storage for MP3 players or other line-in accessories. Wireless transmitter interrupted network traffic regardless of which channel it was set on.
If a lamp/speaker multitasker could be developed that delivers a decent sound quality, I would definitely be interested. It would save space while getting rid of those evil speaker wires. But, the review isn’t exactly glowing, so I’d hold off on this concept until it is a bit more reliable.

Not to mention that it’s UGLY! I would rather wire speakers into my walls than buy something like that. What are you going to do with the old lamps you have?

I think that speakers in general need a redesign. Maybe I am too particular, but I just think that most are ugly or at best moderately bearable. Speakers that multi-task almost seems like asking too much. My husband and I have put off purchasing a good sound system for months because we cannot agree on one that has both the form and function that we want.

There are other more elegant solutions out there, such as recessed wall and ceiling speakers whose coverings can be painted to match the wall/ceiling and take on an inobtrusive appearance. Or there are the NXT ultra flat speaker panels. I think that a lamp/speaker combo is impractical – rarely does one want light in the same place as speakers and as such you would probably end up creating a cluttered out of place look.

I actually like the design of the lights with the speakers. I think it could have been done much, much worst. I would use them if their sound quality was better.
