Reader suggestion: CNN article provides useful uncluttering tips
Reader Jeff points us to a September 10 CNN article with Oprah.com regular Arianne Cohen titled “Outta here! Professional purgers’ organizing tips.” It’s an inspiring article worth a read if you haven’t already seen it.
I like the following advice on clothing and cleaning out your closet:
Prevention: “The rule of thumb,” says [Barry] Izsak [president of the National Association of Professional Organizers], “is that when something new comes in, at least one thing — preferably two — must go. And be realistic. If you’re a size 10, hold on to the 8s but not the 6s.”

Whenever something new comes into my daughter’s room, we insist that at least one item if not two must go. It is true for stuffed animals, shoes, knick-knacks, and so on. It cuts down on the junk and forces her to make choices. “If you really ‘need’ something, what are you going to give up to make it happen?” we tell her!

On the topic of clothes that no longer fit. The releasing of the old smaller sizes can be very freeing and thus take stress and pressure of yourself to loose weight. I have found that with clients I work with it calls them to be more present with who they are, face fears or issues related to the weight gain and sit more with the person who is in front of them. As a result many people loose weight without trying.

I disagree with the comment: “If you’re a size 10, hold on to the 8s but not the 6s.” Whether too small or too large, don’t hold onto anything that doesn’t fit.
