Having read through the how & why unitaskers are chosen, I still think this one should have been left off the list. There are MANY MANY more items out there that perform a single task that are far less useful. When there's no more goofiness to tear apart then the rest are fair game.

For those few who have major slicing needs - ok, have one. But I work in a cafe and all I can think when I look at this thing is how much a pain-in-the-a** it is to clean a slicer! I used to clean houses and I look at Rattan/Wicker furniture the same way. For me, uncluttering has a lot to do with how much time I spend cleaning.

Oh, and the crock-pot thing - there are about 5,000 thinkgs you can do with a crock-pot - it can be left on while you're out of the house and dinner is ready when you get home. Slicing is far more limited, and I believe someone already mentioned the danger factor if you have kids (or accident prone adults).

holy schnikes! i thought i was the only one who used a deli slicer for eggplant parm! i work in a kitchen that has a deli attached- a quick hop over to the deli counter makes my eggplant parm prep a LOT quicker.

@Joe -- As we have said numerous times, we understand that some people may find Unitaskers useful. In fact, I own three that have been featured on the site. But, for the majority of our readers, Unitaskers would just collect dust and be clutter.

To learn more about how and why we choose Unitaskers, see our article on Unitaskers Explained:

Indeed I did. The slow cooker is ELECTRIC too. Oh and I already have a stove and it's HUGE too. The point is that the slicer can actually be useful to some families. If you bought your meat unsliced in decent quantities you would save a bunch by slicing it yourself.

@Joe -- Did you READ the post? The slicer is ELECTRIC and it's HUGE. A crockpot is useful, this is ridiculous ... well, unless you work in a deli. But, I'm going out on a limb and say that most of our readers don't live and work in a deli.

Wait the slow cooker is uncluttered kitchen cooking, but a slicer is a made fun of unitasker. I'm thinking its time to cut down on the number of posts, you're starting to write posts for the sake of writing posts.

When you’re at the deli, do you ever think to yourself, “I could slice that turkey at home if I only I had the right equipment“?

Yes - in addition to a lot of other items which I could cook to my liking, probably tastier and healthier.

As much as I like the idea behind this site, I'm beginning to wonder about whether or not it lives up to its ideals. Making fun of stupid unitaskers is one thing. They're stupid and deserve the shame. When you find something that does a single useful (and practical) job and does it well, then maybe you should leave it alone and move on to something else. One can argue that this is expensive, but you're looking at Williams-Sonoma.

The storage space is an issue - that is true. And sure, this may not be for everyone, but for those people who could actually use this, this is well worth the storage space. I would love to make my own roast beef, prepared the way I like, and have it thinly sliced. Could I slice it by hand? Sure, but I doubt I could make the cuts nicely and evenly the way a slicer could.

Now for me this isn't really worth it - because I don't really use sliced products very often. If I did I would much rather make my own than have to rely on a deli that overcharges for salty, processed products.

We have a manual one, which was $80 on Amazon, as opposed to $280. It does take up a lot of room, true, but we store it in the garage in its box. When we have company for a roast, or buy a turkey breast or roast to slice up, we do it all at once. It's not used often, but to great effect, but it isn't for apartment living, that's for sure.

If anyone wants to get rid of his slicer unitasker, please let me know. I can't wait to slice up yummy proscuitos with this thing. Every time coming back from Europe, I'm missing their hams, and not owning this instrument is the only reason that's preventing me from smuggling some yummy spanish ham back to the States.

I used an industrial sized one when I worked in a deli, never need one at home. A turkey carver works well enough if you know how to handle it, or just go to a deli and get the thin meat (I usually cut my personal meat thicker than customers wanted anyway)

hey...10 of the 16 unitaskers that you have chosen are all food/kitchen related items. it's time to branch out into other areas of ridiculousness. :-)
