I'm just about finished remodeling my kitchen and the only tool I rented (as opposed to buying, or already owning) was a wet saw for the tiles. I did that because buying a quality wet saw for only a handful of uses didn't justify the hefty price tag.

If you do most home improvement projects yourself I think it is very beneficial to buy most tools, despite the added clutter and cost. If you rarely use the tool, you can always sell it and get back a significant portion of what you paid. If you end up using it often, you'll be glad you bought it in the first place.

We have a tool lending library in our town. You have to be a resident. If you destroy the item, you have to buy it but otherwise its free.

I've found that the tools that you can rent are often more powerful than ones you could buy at a reasonable price. For example, a good (and I mean super heavy duty, professional grade) power washer can easily be rented, but one of similar quality costs more than a thousand dollars and isn't even for sale at Lowe's or Home Depot. Renting, especially in this case, is by far the best option. It would take more than 10 years of renting to come close to the price of a professional grade one ... and one you purchase may not even last for 10 years.

I've found that in several cases it was easier and cheaper to buy a tool and then resell it on craigslist when I was done with it. Large tools generally hold their value well. It works best for those big projects that may take more than one weekend. Then you don't feel the pressure of having to finish a project TODAY, or it will cost you another $50.
