All this talk about Ikea got me thinking about a blog I once saw, Ikea Hacker. Chock full of little tricks to repurposing Ikea hardware.

Regarding the The Mandal headboard: I bought a similarly designed item from IKEA a few years ago thinking how neat it would be to store my dvds/cds this way. Great idea in theory, bad in practice. Each one of my hundreds of cds looked attractive (and happy!) up there on the wall but soon each disc was covered in dust. I found I needed to clean them so often it detracted from how good I felt about their good looks.

I took them off the wall and found a way to store my collections in some nice looking drawers. In the end, less mess and less visual clutter.

i am right there with you – we are IKEA addicts and can’t seem to stop, even after we vow to start buying “grownup” furniture instead of the temporary stuff. we’ve probably spent enough $$ at IKEA over the years to have saved up for a few true quality pieces! IKEA, i wish i could quit you…

Besides reducing clutter, my goal is to reduce IKEA items. Slowly replace them with REAL furniture, not disposable, cheap products.

Do you know if the catalog includes all items or just items they will ship? I know that sounds ridiculous, why would they show items they won’t ship in a catalog? But they do it on the online catalog, so I just thought I’d ask.

I love Ikea, well as much as I can love it from their website. I know it gets put down constantly because it is cheap, but you know, poor student, don’t care much about anything except cheap!

I just wish they would expand the items available to order online! There’s hardly anything available except through the actual stores. I don’t even know why they post the items on their site if you can’t order them.

It would take me at least a day to drive to the nearest Ikea where I live. So no Ikea for me. It’s too bad too, cause I’d be a faithful customer!

@LazyLightning–My guess is that Ikea got my address from past purchase history data. “Current resident” is the name on the catalog, though, so it may just be that I live in a near-store mailing area. At the stores they have stacks of them near the entrances. Also, did you check out the flash version of the catalog online instead of the .pdf? It’s a little easier to manage …

How does one get an IKEA catalog mailed to them? I’d much rather look at it at home than at a 380 page PDF… how did you sign up to get yours?

IKEA is a monster of a company! The parking lot is always packed in Houston.

My biggest issue with IKEA is quality. It just doesn’t hold up very well. Moving to a different will also take a toll on the furniture. Then again you get what you pay for.

Ironically, the stuff is priced so low that you end up cluttering your house up with little sub 10 dollar items.

I’m a little annoyed with IKEA at the moment. I do like their stuff, but I’ve just had horrible service with them.

I ordered a Jonas desk July 13. I got an email saying it would be delivered on the 17. 17 rolls around, still no desk. I call and ask about it. Turns out they have the wrong address. They were going to ship it to my home instead of my work.

Then they tell me that the estimated delivery date is usually wrong and can take 2 weeks more afterwards.

Great. So I change my address to my work place, wait two more weeks. I call to inquire what the fark is going on.

They have the wrong address AGAIN, and they also have the wrong number to call me back.

S.O.B.!

They give me a direct line to Encinda, another delivery company. I call them, they change the crap in the system, then give me a direct line to ANOTHER delivery company. I call them, and finally get everything in order . . . but then they tell me it will be delivered between 4-9 in the evening on a Wednesday.

And yeah, I won’t be at work between 4-9 Wednesday evening!

So I have to change my address BACK to my home address just so I’ll be here to get the desk.

I should get it tomorrow. Hopefully nothing else will go wrong.
