As far as them being stolen? I’ve been both a seller and a buyer of gift cards on eBay. In the past, I’ve gotten cards for blockbuster or Borders books when I’d rather have Best Buy or Circuit city.

In NYC craigslist is also a good source for gift cards. However it is open to scamming. Always meet at the store, verify the value at the till or by the dial in number on the card (most have them) and spend them immediately. A known scam is to copy the code on the card, sell it, and get online and use it before the buyer redeems it. Not to be a cynic or anything!
After xmas i had a store credit from a gift i didnt want, and traded it with someone who had a gift card to a store he didnt want…worked out well for both of us….there were tons of gift cards listed after christmas…

I’m a thrift store and bulk retailer shopper in general so I cant really see spending the $75 small department store gift card I got as a gift, the prices aren’t that great. I wouldve discount sold(cashed) my card on ebay if a friend hadnt bought it from me. As with any purchase check the feedback rating with the ebay seller.

My purchase protection through my credit card stipulates that the purchse has to be 100% paid for by the CC. In that case, it’s not a good deal to use giftcards.

Why should someone presume that an eBay seller with a good feedback rating and a high number of sales is a thief? I have personally sold gift cards that I have bought with American Express Membership Rewards points. It’s the easiest way to turn the points into cash.

The cards are usually from returns. Please be aware that thieves will steal, abuse a generous return policy and sell the “store credit only” card they get for the cash. Don’t be an accessory after the fact!

They’re also likely to have been stolen. I wouldn’t buy one on eBay.

They end up costing you less than they are worth. They are usually sold by people who have received them as gifts but would prefer the flexibility to spend money anywhere, not just at the named retailer listed on the card.
