Defo not a new thing! I own a vintage one from the 1920's bought from http://www.inmyhandbag.com, who sell vintage and new ones. They are UK based but do ship internationally so Hollywood is covered!

I bought one of those Hollywood Purse Hooks – ugly is right!! They have much nicer ones (cheap, too – starting at $5.99) on zookhooks.com. I love the glitter shoe, and I got my mom the blue czech crystal one. She uses it all the time! Good invention, whoever invented it.

Their “dirty floor” selling point is pretty lame. They should market the security aspect of it – if your purse is hanging in front of you its much less likely to get stolen. Here in SF, we’ve had a big rash of purse thefts in restaurants. On every occasion, the purse was either hung off the back of the woman’s chair or underneath it.

Too funny… I have one of these! I bought it years ago at Regal Greetings and Gifts for very little money. My mom (she’s French) found it, and told me excitedly that she had one when she was in her twenties – so yes, it’s European! Mine actually looks almost asian in its design: a beautiful lacquered butterfly, not at all cheap-looking. I use it a lot, and people never cease to comment on it. Mostly, they’ve never seen one before, and worry that my “make-up compact” will fall on the floor, so close to the edge of the table!

The Hollywood purse hooks are hideously ugly and cheaply made – I made the mistake of buying a set. A much better choice, though more expensive, (but worth it) is the PursePal version. These are seriously nicer and they donate to charity for each one sold. You can find at http://www.purse-pal.com

I can’t believe people actually carry purses. I’ve always hated them. If it won’t fit in my pocket, I use a money belt or a backpack. Purses–yuck! I watch women carry purses which keeps them in a position where they can’t *do* anything with one arm. Talk about clutter.

I’m glad that others think this is a good idea. I sent this product in for a Unitasker Wednesday after I bought one and then couldn’t believe I bought one. I got mine from eBay a lot cheaper. I actually use mine 90% of the time I eat out. Every time I pull it out, my husband rolls his eyes and says, “You’ll buy anything.”

I don’t think this is a useless item at all, though this example is spectacularly ugly. Many restaurants in London provide these hooks built into the table (or similarly small shelves) to put your bag. This means it can lean against your leg, you’re much more aware of it than on the floor. If they’d had them in the restaurant where I had my bag stolen back in September, it would have saved me a serious amount of stress and hassle.

My grandmother had one of these things thirty or forty years ago. I actually still have it, although I don’t ever use it since, you know, I’m a guy who doesn’t carry a purse. I’ve always thought it was a really good idea. The hype on that site, however, is hilariously bad.

I’m European, and I remember these hooks from the 80′s when we had to use them in our classrooms for our bookbags – so the teacher wouldn’t trip when walking between desks, and the bookbags would stay clean. This is definitely not a new invention, but yes, it’s European

Only holds 35 pounds? It would never work for me! It’s the hideous faux diamond that really makes it an impossible purchase. At that price ($5, but didn’t check the shipping costs), I would consider getting one. I often meet up with friends at a food court for lunch. Not a floor you can put a fabric bag on, the back of the seats are round, the table is too tiny for four lunches and four purses, and I hate eating with purse on lap.
