Lose weight without gaining clutter

So you are thinking of purchasing some exercise equipment to get into shape at home? You may want to reconsider. Some of you out there probably don’t even have a room to store that stationary bike or that treadmill. Unless you have a home gym, you are going to have create a hybrid room. A laundry/exercise room or possibly a office/weight room? And don’t even think of setting that thing up in your bedroom.

Try joining a gym or find other ways to get into shape without purchasing a bulky piece of equipment. Why not walk, run, or ride your bike around your neighborhood or local park. Why stay inside on a treadmill or an exercise bike when you can do the same activity outside? When the weather doesn’t cooperate take your workout to a gym. You don’t even need a gym to jump rope, do sit-ups, or push-ups. The amount of cardiovascular activity you get from jumping rope is just as good as any clunky machine that you bring into your home and the jump rope will fit nicely in a small drawer.

And for those of you that have ancient equipment that is used for nothing more than a clothes rack, take the initiative to get rid of that clutter and then go for a jog.

“When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.” Confuscious

Walk on by the elevator and take the steps instead.

Or buy a Wii and play Wii Sports!

Working from home a lot, going to the gym is very often the main excuse to get out of the house, so that’s another benefit right there :)
    Organize IT

I just bit the bullet and joined a gym and hired a trainer. It is awesome for accountability and as a person who works at home a lot, it definitely gets me out several times a week!

We can only ride our bikes outside for about 5-6 months/year. The rest of the time it is too cold/icy/snowy in the Great White North. Instead of buying a stationary bike which would never be used in the summer months, we purchased an adjustable bike stand (http://www.minoura.jp/index-et.html) The training stand takes up MUCH less space than a traditional stationary bike and can be easily adjusted for different bikes.
Now we can ride whenever we want while we watch the TV shows we have recorded (saves time because we can fast-forward the commercials).

I recently gave away exercise equipment on Freecycle.org. I still have a treadmill in the basement. I do use that. My basement doubles as my garage. Instead of going to the gym, I come home and go straight to the treadmill as if I went to the gym from work. I would only recommend doing this if the space is available and the equipment will get used. When I lived in a 650 sq ft apartment I could not have the luxury of home equipment. I can come up with a thousand excuses why I can’t go to the gym, but I always go home :)

I’m in the middle of a massive de cluttering of my house and this article hit home as I have a giant treadmill (that weighs a ton), an exercise bike and a large assortment of free weights that I never use and now have to figure out how to get rid of.

I have a treadmill and a stair climber. I also 1) a large house 2)agoraphobia and 3) a major aversion to exercising in front of other people. This is the best option for me.

I was going to mention my husband’s bike trainer (http://www.trisports.com/cycfluidtrai.html) as being a piece of clutter until I saw Jacki’s comment above. But then we live in sunny Sydney, not the Great White North. My husband really doesn’t have an excuse…The worst thing is – I bought it for him!

Take a PE class at the local community college. Tennis, badminton, swimming, whatever you’re in to. Some even have “gym class” where you go through an orientation and then have free use of the gym for a quarter or semester for the price of 1 unit or less (usually around 30 bucks or so with all the other fees). The best CC around here has a spectacular gym with equipment that rivals a paid gym, tons of courts for various sports, and a nice pool. Exercise on the cheap!
