If you run the numbers you'll see you do better with the current rebate on Amazon without sales tax. In general though, you're right, buying refurbished models direct from Apple is a great way to save money when there isn't a rebate on Amazon. I was teetering all week between dumping more dollars into Hardware repair for our Gateway system for the family, (crashed 4 times in 14 months) or buying a Mac. I was within reach of an Apple Store but had yet to make a visit, after reading your post I did the math to account for a $75.00 rebate. All said and done my savings were $160.00 for a 20" iMac arriving next week via Amazon. Like the watchmaker says, timing is everything!
