If you work for a large corporation (or you know someone who does) you might want to check to see if there are discounts offered there as well - my last megacorp job provided 10% discounts on direct orders from Apple, even for custom configurations.

The problem with the refurbished models is that you still end up paying sales tax, which eats up any saving. If you run the numbers you'll see you do better with the current rebate on Amazon without sales tax. In general though, you're right, buying refurbished models direct from Apple is a great way to save money when there isn't a rebate on Amazon.

And I forgot to mention: if you're looking for a deal and don't care about having the absolute latest and greatest (or build to order) then check out Apple's refurbished models. http://tinyurl.com/3dehjx

If you don't need (or *desperately want*) your new Mac NOW, then it's smart to check the buying guide: http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/
The Apple Developer's conference is coming up in June, so they might be announcing some new 'product' for the junkies. Believe me, it's frustrating to buy a new computer only to have an improved version released *very* shortly thereafter. Sales are often a sign of unloading stock for the bringing in of the new. Caveat emptor. (Can you tell this happened to me once?)

MacMall also has the usual great deals, including free printers and $10 for Parallels. I don't work for them. http://www.macmall.com/

Like the watchmaker says, timing is everything!
I was teetering all week between dumping more dollars into Hardware repair for our Gateway system for the family, (crashed 4 times in 14 months) or buying a Mac. I was within reach of an Apple Store but had yet to make a visit, after reading your post I did the math to account for a $75.00 rebate. All said and done my savings were $160.00 for a 20" iMac arriving next week via Amazon.

I couldn't be happier about my Macbook. Well alright, it could have a real graphics card, but for the money it is a great laptop!

Started reading Unclutterer a few days ago and have really enjoyed all the posts, keep it up =)
