Ending cable confusion
One of the best ways to reduce cable-clutter is to make sure cables are sized appropriately. Cables To Go sells ready-to-use ethernet cable in lengths as short as 1 foot. They also stock cables in a variety of colors, which makes cable identification simple.
You can also buy these same short and color-coded cables from Amazon, although the selection is more limited.

If you have need for a lot of cables, you can buy a spool of Ethernet cable and some connectors (and a crimper), cut them to the exact length and crimp the connectors on yourself. Yes, there’s some extra clutter in keeping a spool and a crimper in the storage closet, but the reduced “rat’s nest” is worth it– it’s also cheaper per foot to build your own. Same goes for audio and video cables in you have the inclination.
