I just write "return to sender" on obvious junk mail. I often also ask them to remove my name/address and mention the Data Protection Act (UK).

One of my pet peeves is the grocery store flyers that arrive in my mailbox every week. Conveniently, it is the only thing my mailman delivers on Wednesdays. I just found a website to remove my address from this annoyance. They say it takes up to 6 weeks for removal to take effect.

If I receive junk mail with one of of those free post return envelopes, I return everything they sent me in that envelope, with "PLEASE RECYCLE" written in big letters. That usually gets me noticed, and more importantly, taken off their list.

If you're in the UK, you can sign up for free to the Mailing Preference Service http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/ Any company that bulk mails has to check their list against the MPS and remove anyone who has registered. There is also a Telephone Preference Service, for unsolicited calls. I signed up to both and it had a huge impact on the amount of junk mail I received.

There is also a company who will unsubscribe you to those credit card offers. It always made me feel uncomfortable knowing that I could have problems with identity theft with those offers constantly coming in.
here's the site, you can also call their toll free phone number- Believe thats also on their site.https://www.optoutprescreen.com/?rf=t

I don't know about the other services, but I subscribed to Green Dimes about 8 weeks ago. The amount of just mail to my house has decreased significantly, I'd say by 50%. And they say it will taper off even more over time. I say it's money well spent.

To find other companies that work to stop junk mail, do a google search using the keywords: stop paper junk mail -email -e-mail. A number of different companies and reviews of those companies will be returned for your search.
